Description:
Abstract:
This dataset consists of survey data, plots, photos, and a photo index from a cross section survey of the Eklutna River at the Glenn Highway bridge in Alaska. The cross sections were surveyed in 2016 and 2017 using a total station, then adjusted to match datums for a Municipality of Anchorage orthophoto and Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities bridge as-built elevations.
Purpose:
The purpose of the dataset is to provide a baseline for future comparison of changes in channel elevation in Eklutna River. This dataset supports USGS miscellaneous hydrologic investigations at bridges in Alaska.

Relative Horzontal and Vertical Accuracy: The accuracy of the survey data relative to other points within the same survey is less than 0.1 ft in the vertical and about 0.1 ft in the horizontal, on the basis of survey instrument accuracy, survey procedures, and field conditions. For comparison between surveys, relative accuracy is reduced to about 0.2 ft in the vertical and 0.5 ft in the horizontal to account for error in adjusting surveys to a common datum. Absolute Horizontal and Vertical Accuracy: The absolute horizontal accuracy of the survey data accounts for errors from estimation of coordinates from an orthophoto and is estimated to be 2 ft. The absolute vertical accuracy of the elevation as adjusted to the as-built datum is about 0.4 ft, which accounts for errors in surveying, survey adjustment, and estimation of bridge deck elevation at the guard rail post relative to published elevations.

This orthophoto served as the reference dataset for adjusting points that were surveyed in an arbitrary datum to the horizontal datum of the orthophoto. In particular, the location of guard rail posts surveyed in the field were visually estimated from this orthophoto for the purpose of obtaining a best-fit match during the adjustment process.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Survey data were collected using a Trimble total station from various instrument locations on July 22, October 20, October 25, and November 3, 2016, and May 9, 2017. Cross section monuments were established near the ends of each cross section to serve as reference marks for future repeat surveys. Detailed descriptions of these and additional monuments are described in the data. Cross section data were obtained in three separate survey files, each including data from one or more instrument locations (TS0; TS1, TS2, TS3; TS4, TS5, TS6).
Process_Date: 2017
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Survey data was exported from the proprietary Trimble job file to a spreadsheet. To adjust coordinates from the arbitrary datum of each survey to established horizontal and vertical datums, survey data were translated and rotated (horizontal) or translated (vertical) with no scaling or skewing. Survey data from total station instrument locations TS4, TS5, and TS6 as a group were translated and rotated about the downstream bridge left-most guard rail post point using a spreadsheet and the ESRI ArcGIS Rotate tool until they visually matched the 2015 Municipality of Anchorage orthophoto. Surveyed bridge deck elevations were used to adjust the survey to match the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities bridge as-built elevations. Survey data from TS0, and from TS1, TS2, and TS3 as a group, were each adjusted to match the adjusted TS4 survey using a point in common.
