Description:
Abstract:
This dataset provides a digital elevation model mosaic derived from airborne lidar data acquired in 2018 from September 2–3 over eight separate areas along Alaska's Montague Island coast, between Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska.
Purpose:
During the 1964 Great Alaska earthquake (magnitude 9.2), several megathrust splay faults including the Patton Bay Fault beneath Montague Island ruptured, raising the island by up to 10 meters and producing tsunami waves. These lidar-based digital elevation models facilitate detailed geomorphic study of the coastal landscape resulting from the 1964 earthquake, and from island uplift during ancient earthquakes. These studies characterize earthquake location, recurrence, and magnitude, and will contribute essential information to the U.S. Geological Survey National Seismic Hazard Map.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The raster file attribute values are elevations in meters gridded in 0.5 square meter pixels. The gridded elevation values are derived from final laser (lidar) returns, which located elevation values and horizontal positions within +/-10 cm based on post-processing described in "process steps". The 0.5 square m/pixel gridded lidar-based elevations agree with spatially overlapping elevation values housed in radar (IfSAR)-based digital elevation models comprising elevation values gridded in 5 square meter pixels.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Anomalous point elevation values were removed using spike and sink removal algorithms, and holes in the data within the 0.5 square m/pixel resolution were repaired during kriging-based final raster generation.
Completeness_Report:
These DEMs are derived from the last-return lidar point clouds, and omit other laser return points (e.g., from vegetation cover), to represent the bare earth topographic surface of eight lidar survey areas along the coast of Alaska's Montague Island.

Laser (lidar) returns located elevation values with horizontal positions and elevation within +/-0.10 meters based on post-processing described in Process Steps.

Airborne lidar surveys and data processing for digital elevation model generation.

Process_Description:
Airborne lidar survey - between September 2nd and 3rd, 2018 the lidar group from the Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems Center of Expertise (RSGIS CX) at the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) conducted airborne LiDAR and electro-optical (EO) imagery surveys over 8 areas of interest (AOI) on Montague Island, Alaska for the USGS Alaska Science Center. CRREL used their HeliPod system installed on a Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter, consisting of: Reigl LMS VQ-480i laser scanner; Hasselblad A6-D aerial mapping camera; iXBlue ATLANS-C inertial navigation system (INS); and NexTrack2 flight management system (FMS). The aircraft is owned and operated by Alpine Air Alaska, based out of Girdwood, Alaska. The CRREL team completed two successful days of flights, basing out of Girdwood, AK. Each day the team of two (pilot and system operator) landed on the island to setup a temporary base station (Trimble R10) to be used in post-processing kinematic corrections of the aircraft trajectories. All flights were flown at a target AGL of 500 m and airspeed of 60-knots. Coincident EO imagery was collected at 1.5Hz during LiDAR data logging.

Process_Description:
Post-survey processing of lidar data and digital elevation model generation - The post-processing workflow followed these general steps: (1) Download laser scanner, INS, and camera data from the acquisition laptop and/or sensors, (2) Download base station data from the GNSS receiver (Trimble R10), (3) Post-process the base station receivables to determine base station position using National Geodetic Survey’s Online User Positioning Service software (OPUS), (4) Calculate GNSS antenna to IMU lever arm values using Inertial Explorer software, (5) Post-process the GNSS/INS trajectory against the base station receivables to determine a Smoothed Best Estimate of Trajectory (SBET) using iXBlue ATLANS- Post-Processing Software (APPS), (6) Post-process the laser scanner data against the SBET to create a point cloud using the Riegl RiPROCESS software suite, (7) Manually clean any noise points above or below the ground surface using the Riegl RiPROCESS software suite, (8) Export the point cloud from the post-processing software into a deliverable file format (LAZ) using the Riegl RiPROCESS software suite, (9) Process bare earth DEM products for all AOIs using the Point Data Abstraction Library software, (10) Use the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration online vertical datum transformation tool VDATUM (https://vdatum.noaa.gov/) to transform the DEMs from NAD83(2011 Epoch 2010.00)/GRS80 ellipsoid heights to NAVD88 orthometric heights using geoid model GEOID12B.
