Description:
Abstract:
This dataset provides scaled and geotagged digital photographs of river sediment acquired in August 2021 at 21 sites along the Totatlanika River in central Alaska, and tabular sediment grain size data derived from the photographs.
Purpose:
This dataset was acquired for the purpose of quantifying grain size distributions along the Totatlanika River, which drains the minerally endowed and tectonically active northern Alaska Range. The derivative grain size data can be used to understand sediment transport and landscape processes in this system.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Real-world location accuracy of the photographs is expected to be within 5 meters. The photos are expected to accurately depict real-world sediment grain sizes to the millimeter scale. Tests between field and photographically measured river sediment indicates consistency with negligible uncertainty. Each photo in this data release archives a unique ground area without overlapping or repeating other photos such that size measurements are not erroneously repeated for a particular grain. Photos plot in the approximate 5 meter vicinity of the map location of collection based on visual inspection in a GIS, consistent with expected horizontal positional accuracy.
Logical_Consistency_Report: Attribute values fall within expected ranges.
Completeness_Report:
The photos were collected on downstream traverses ranging from 41 to 292 meters long, at 21 sites spanning approximately 60 km between the headwaters and northern Alaska Range front along the Totatlanika River. Sites were selected based on evenness of downstream spacing, bed exposure, and helicopter accessibility. At each site, photos were typically collected 1–2 meters apart; none of the photos overlap. All grain sizes measured in the photos at each site are included in tables labeled by site.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Digital photos were acquired in the field from 2 August 2021 to 5 August 2021 during a period of low water that provided ample bed and bank exposure. At 21 different sites along the river, scaled and geotagged photographs were acquired using a Canon EOS 6D Mark II on riverbank traverses ranging from 41 to 292 meters in downstream length
Process_Date: 20210805
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Using the image analysis software ImageJ (Schneider et al., 2012), photos were digitally scaled and overlaid with a regular grid of 0.5 or 1.0 m depending on the size of the photographed area, which generally varied between 1 and 4 square m. Clasts (millimeter-scale pebbles, cobbles, or boulders up to meter-scale) at or nearest to the intersection of each grid cell were measured on the shorter of two visible axes, assumed to represent the intermediate axis, or b-axis, of each measured grain. A minimum of 100 clasts were measured along each traverse, producing a total of 5750 measurements across the 21 sites. The ImageJ workflow produced a map of serially numbered measured grains from each photo, and a spreadsheet containing mapped grain number, original photo file name, and b-axis measurement length.
Process_Date: 20220501
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Grain size distribution statistics were computed in MATLAB (Mathworks, Natick, MA) for each site based on the measurements conducted in ImageJ. This involved computing the median and 84th percentile of size measurements for each site. The median and 84th percentile represent the grain size coarser than 50% and 84% of grains measured at the site, respectively. These statistics are termed the D50 and D84, and are used for modeling bed shear stress, flow resistance, and sediment transport thresholds.
