Description:
Abstract:
This dataset provides shapefiles and tabular data representing river channel geometries measured on photogrammetric imagery and extracted from a photogrammetric digital elevation model (acquired August 2021) along the Totatlanika River in central Alaska.
Purpose:
This dataset was acquired for the purpose of quantifying channel properties along the Totatlanika River, which drains the minerally endowed and tectonically active northern Alaska Range. The derivative data can be used to understand sediment transport and landscape processes in this system.

The USGS contracted Fairbanks Fodar to collect high-resolution airborne fodar (photogrammetry) data that these measurements are derived from. Adrian Bender (USGS) conducted the mapping analyses that produced the derivative data. Technical reviews by USGS colleagues Keith Labay and John Reed.
Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Real-world location accuracy of measurements is expected to be at the meter scale as of the fodar acquisition date. Point checks in the field imply that the remote measurements accurately depict real-world measurements to the meter scale.Tests between field and remotely measured boulders indicates consistency with negligible uncertainty.
Logical_Consistency_Report: Attribute values fall within expected ranges.
Completeness_Report:
The Totatlanika River channel was mapped on fodar data (Bender & Nolan, 2021) continuously for ~60 km between the headwaters and northern Alaska Range front. Channel width data were extracted from the fodar rasters continuously downstream within the mapped channel, and channel elevation data where pixel slope is 3 degrees or less were extracted continuously downstream within the mapped channel.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Horizontal positional accuracy is expected to be within 1 m, consistent with the sub-meter resolution of the fodar data.

Imagery on which the Totatlanika River channel and boulders of this dataset were mapped.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The Totatlanika River channel was mapped on the fodar orthomosaic (Bender and Nolan, 2021) based on riparian vegetation limits, slope toe trim lines, and steep banks or canyon walls using ArcMap version 10.8 (ESRI, Redlands, CA).
Source_Used_Citation_Abbreviation: Bender and Nolan, 2021
Process_Date: 20210805
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Using ArcMap version 10.8 (ESRI, Redlands, CA) and the MATLAB software Changeom (https://www.burchfisher.com/data.html, last access: 3/17/2023) was used to generate a center line on which bank-full channel width was measured every meter downstream, and subsequently smoothed on a one kilometer (river distance) moving window to visualize average downstream changes.
Source_Used_Citation_Abbreviation: Bender and Nolan, 2021
Process_Date: 20220501
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
To generate the Totatlanika River elevation profile using ArcMap version 10.8 (ESRI, Redlands, CA), fodar digital elevation model (Bender & Nolan, 2021) pixel elevations within the bank-full polygon where slope less that or equal to 3 degrees were extracted to points and located by river distance along the channel center line generated in Step 2. In MATLAB (Mathworks, Natick, MA), channel elevations were then binned on one-meter river distance intervals, and the minimum binned elevations were used to compose the Totatlanika River channel elevation profile.
