Description:
Abstract:
This dataset provides shapefiles and tabular data representing boulders measured on photogrammetric imagery (acquired August 2021) along the Totatlanika River in central Alaska.
Purpose:
This dataset was acquired for the purpose of quantifying grain size distributions along the Totatlanika River, which drains the minerally endowed and tectonically active northern Alaska Range. The derivative grain size data can be used to understand sediment transport and landscape processes in this system.

Adrian Bender (USGS) mapped and measured the boulders and produced the data release with technical reviews by USGS colleagues Keith Labay and John Reed.
Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Real-world location accuracy of the boulder measurements is expected to be within the measurement scale (i.e., meters) as of the fodar acquisition date. Point checks in the field imply that the remote measurements accurately depict real-world boulder sizes to the decimeter scale. Tests between field and remotely measured boulders indicates consistency with negligible uncertainty.
Logical_Consistency_Report: Attribute values fall within expected ranges.
Completeness_Report: No data were omitted or missing.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Horizontal positional accuracy of the boulders is expected to be within 1 meter, consistent with the sub-meter resolution of the fodar data.

Imagery on which the Totatlanika River channel and boulders of this dataset were mapped.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The Totatlanika River channel was mapped on the fodar orthomosaic (Bender and Nolan, 2021) using ArcMap version 10.8 (ESRI, Redlands, CA). The channel polygon was then converted to a regular 25-meter grid.
Source_Used_Citation_Abbreviation: Bender and Nolan, 2021
Process_Date: 20210805
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Boulders were measured on the 25-meter grid, spanning approximately 60 km between the headwaters and northern Alaska Range front. Using ArcMap version 10.8 (ESRI, Redlands, CA), the largest visible boulder in each channel polygon grid cell was mapped by digitizing a line across the shorter of two visible boulder axes at the finest possible map resolution. Measurement lengths and midpoint coordinates were stored in the "boulders_all.csv" file.
Source_Used_Citation_Abbreviation: Bender and Nolan, 2021
Process_Date: 20220501
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
For measurements >1m, the maximum, median, minimum, and standard deviation of boulder size as well as total measured length and count per kilometer river reach were computed in MATLAB (Mathworks, Natick, MA). This involved grouping the boulder measurements in kilometer river distance bins, then calculating each metric per bin. These estimates characterize the coarsest bedload along the approximately 60 km studied length of the Totatlanika River.
