Description:
Abstract:
This data release contains whole rock major and trace element data for 399 igneous and sedimentary rock samples collected from the Western Alaska Range between 1968 and 2014 and funded by the Mineral Resources Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. All materials were analyzed by ALS Global, between 2014 and 2018, by a range of different techniques, so multiple unique entries for a given element relate to different analytical methods or preparations, as detailed in accompanying metadata. Some legacy samples were analyzed for trace elements only, with major elements and legacy trace element analyses for these appearing in Granitto et al. (2019a, 2019b).
Purpose:
The geochemical data from igneous and sedimentary rock samples aid in the interpretation of possible tectonic environment, melting sources, and crystallization history. These data contribute to understanding the geologic history of the Alaska Range.

Sample collection was funded by the Mineral Resources Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. All materials were analyzed by ALS Global between 2014 and 2018.

Horizontal position was measured in different ways, depending on the date and/or type of the sample collection. Location of samples collected since 2000 were determined by hand-held GPS units with positional accuracy of three meters or less, but those individuals collecting the sample may have reported their positions at time of collection in either datum NAD83 or datum WGS84, as noted in the field 'Datum'. For the locations of the samples collected prior to 2000, these were marked on 1:63,360 scale topographic sheets in datum NAD27 by the original collector. The latitude and longitude positions were read from the NAD27 topographic sheets and then converted to NAD83.

Methods used for sample preparation of geochemistry analyses by ALS between 2014 and 2018. Prior to crushing, samples for whole-rock analysis were trimmed by USGS staff to remove weathering or heterogeneities, and cut surfaces were lapped to remove any saw metal. Sample material is crushed to >70% passing 2 mm, and a 250 g split is then pulverized in low-chrome steel grinding mills to >85% passing 75 microns, with barren material passing through pulverizers between each sample. Standards (AGV2, DNC1, DTS2b, GSP2, QLO1, W-2) were submitted as unknown samples to monitor accuracy. 'Field_Name' in file geology_Data_Dictionary_Geochem_Data_WesternAlaskaRange_Todd_Alaska_2021.csv provides element (or element oxide), unit (% versus ppm), and a subscript composite indicating the analytical method. "XRF26" – A calcined or ignited sample (0.9 g) is added to 9.0g of metaborate/lithium tetraborate (LiBO2 /Li2B4O7) flux (50 % - 50 % Li2B4O7 - LiBO2), mixed well and fused in an auto fluxer between 1050 - 1100°C. A flat molten glass disc is prepared from the resulting melt. This disc is then analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry.
