Abstract:
This data release includes three tables containing cosmogenic beryllium-10 and aluminum-26 concentrations and related data from samples collected at four sites in central Alaska in 2020, prepared in 2022 at the University of Vermont (UVM), and measured at the Purdue Rare Isotope Measurement lab (PRIME) in 2022. The file "geology_siteLocations_centralAK_bender.csv" contains site locations in the NAD83 reference frame, and burial ages computed from raw data contained in the other files. All files are linked by the site_id_short field.
Purpose:
This dataset was developed for the purpose of dating the deposition of (1) ancient gravels on terraces along Birch and Beaver Creeks, which are Yukon River tributaries that drain the minerally endowed Yukon-Tanana upland in central Alaska, and (2) the uppermost Nenana Gravel along the northern Alaska Range front in the Tanana basin. All of these sites are located in central Alaska, United States.

Process_Description:
Cosmogenic isochron burial dating - A fully referenced description of this method appears in (Bender et al., 2022). The isochron method requires sampling quartz-bearing sedimentary material archiving a range of pre-burial isotope concentrations at a single depth horizon (indicative of common burial history) buried by several meters of sediment, to minimize post-burial production of each isotope. Samples were collected from shallow hand-dug pits (sample horizons 2-3 meters deep). Samples were prepared at the University of Vermont. The Aluminum-26/Aluminum-27 and Beryllium-10/Beryllium-9 ratios were measured via accelerator mass spectrometry at the Purdue Rare Isotope Measurement Laboratory in several runs in 2022. Each isotope measurement was corrected for background isotope levels by subtracting the average of blank measurements (Bender et al., 2022).
