Abstract:
This data release contains three tables of U-Pb zircon isotopic data generated from analyses of 40 metaplutonic and metavolcanic rocks from the Yukon-Tanana Upland of western Yukon and east-central Alaska and one sample from southern Yukon. One of the tables also reports U-Pb data for two titanite analyses for one of the samples. U-Pb zircon ages from analyzed samples range from 363.5 ± 3.8 to 253.1 ± 0.7 Ma and were collected from parautochthonous North America and the allochthonous Yukon-Tanana terrane. U-Pb zircon data include 216 individual analyses by ID-TIMS and 35 individual analyses of two samples by LA-ICP-MS. ID-TIMS analyses of titanite give concordant 206Pb-238U ages of 333 and 338 Ma. Two U-Pb tables report the isotopic composition of uranium (U) and thorium (Pb) measured in each grain, ratios of isotopes of lead and uranium isotopes, and the age of each grain. A third table reports interpreted U-Pb ages, sample locations, tectonic assemblage or unit, lithology, analysis method, laboratory used, and basis for age assignment. The data release also contains two tables of whole-rock major- and trace-element geochemical data for metaigneous rocks from the Yukon-Tanana Upland in east-central Alaska for augen gneiss (15 samples) and amphibolite (30 samples).
Purpose:
The geochronology and geochemistry data in this data release were obtained to assess the genesis of igneous rocks in eastern Alaska and western Yukon to better understand their crystallization ages, tectonic relationships, correlations, environment of formation, and by inference their potential for mineral deposits. The U-Pb zircon and titanite age data set was developed from samples collected during geologic mapping and research conducted from 1989 to 2007 and funded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Branch of Alaskan Geology and Mineral Resource Program in Alaska, and grants to James K. Mortensen from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)and University of British Columbia. Our U-Pb zircon data target igneous rocks from a variety of tectonic assemblages that span the Alaska–Yukon border whose origins and relationships have been debated. The whole-rock major and trace element data set of augen gneiss and amphibolite are from samples collected between 1978 and 1996 as part of the Alaska Mineral Resource Assessment program of the USGS. The majority of the geochemical data were previously published in journals (augen gneiss in Dusel-Bacon and Aleinikoff, 1985 GSA Bulletin; amphibolite in Dusel-Bacon and Cooper, 1999 Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences), in addition to some unpublished trace-element data generated at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. We are including previously published data in the release to provide a complete, machine-readable, publicly available dataset that will be archived in perpetuity. This data release contains complete metadata for each sample, some of which was missing in the journal publications.

The zircon samples were run with zircon reference materials. The reference materials were analyzed until fractionation was stable and the variance in the measured 206Pb/238U and 207Pb/206Pb ratios was at or near 1 percent. Reference materials were subsequently analyzed together with unknowns to monitor fractionation throughout the analytical session. Instrumental mass fractionation factors for ID-TIMS analyses at the GSC and UBC were determined by replicate analyses of NBS U and Pb standards and the isotopic compositions recommended by Thirlwall, 2000. Pb isotopic analyses were corrected for initial common Pb compositions based on the model of Stacey and Kramers, 1975. Errors associated with calculated ages were determined using the numerical error propagation method of Roddick (1987) and are given at the 2σ level (95% confidence interval).
For XRF trace-element analyses of augen gneiss samples made at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, matrix corrections were made on standards and unknowns using the Rh Compton peak intensity. Kb interference on Ka intensity (Rb on Y, Sr on Zr, Y on Nb) were corrected by measuring Kb intensity at the respective Ka line (e.g. Rb at Y Ka) for standards and averaging the ratio of Kb:Ka intensity. Twenty-five certified international standards were employed in creating calibration curves.
For whole-rock analyses of amphibolite made at the USGS, analytical precision and accuracy of the spectrophotometric analysis of Nb have been estimated from replicate analyses of eight USGS standard rocks to be 2.9-6.4 % of the amount present (Greenland and Campbell, 1974); precision and accuracy for ICP-AES Nb analysis is comparable. Analytical uncertainties for the other methods, based on replicate analyses of standard rocks (Bacon and Driutt 1988), are reported in Table 1 of Dusel-Bacon and Cooper, 1999. Details about analytical procedures used at USGS are given in Taggart and others (1987).
All Fe reported as Fe2O3 for rocks analyzed by X-ray fluorescence. SIO2 content calculated volatile-free with analysis normalized to total 100.00%.

For analysis of amphibolite whole-rock samples: USGS-analyzed samples were ground in an alumina shatterbox. Major elements were determined by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) on fused glass disks in Lakewood, Colorado (J. Baker, A.J. Bartel, V. McDaniel, K. Stewart, J. Taggart, and J.S. Wahlberg analysts) (Taggart et al., 1987). Ba, Rb, Sr, Y, and Zr were determined by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry XRF in Menlo Park, California (P.E. Bruggman analyst) (Johnson and King, 1987). Emission spectroscopy was used for Cu, Ni, V (Menlo Park; T. Fries, P. Lamothe, and R.W. Lerner, analysts) (Golightly et al., 1987). For all samples except 91ADb15, 91ADb 12, and 91ADb 14A, Nb was determined by spectrophotometric in Reston, Virginia, (E. Campbell, M. Doughten, and B. Libby analysts) (Greenland and Campbell, 1974). Niobium for samples 91ADb15, 91ADb12, and 91ADb14A was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) following quantitative chemical separation (Menlo Park, S.J. Pribble analyst) (Lichte et al., 1987). The remaining elements (Co, Cr, Cs, Hf, Ta, Th, U, Zn, Sc, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, and Lu) were analyzed by instrumental neutron-activation analysis (INAA) in Reston, Virginia (J. Grossman, J.S. Mee, L.J. Schwarz, and G.A. Wandless analysts) (Baedecker and McKown, 1987). For analysis of three amphibolite whole-rock samples by Chemex laboratory, Vancouver, Canada: Major elements (and Cr2O3) were determined by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) analysis of pellets made by meta-borate fusion of powder ground in a tungsten carbide ring mill; lower detection limits are 0.01 %. Trace elements for these samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis of powders ground in a chrome steel ring mill that were subjected to meta-borate fusion followed by dissolution. Ni was determined by atomic absorption following a Nitric aqua regia leach.

For analysis of augen gneiss samples at University of Alaska Fairbanks: Approximately 10 gram alliquots of previously pulverized and homogenized sample material was made into 40 cm pressed pellets, using 1 drop of 5% polyvinyl alcohol solution per 2 grams of sample, and compressed to 10 tons for 2 minutes. Once dried, samples were analyzed with a PanAlytical Axios X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer.

For U-Pb analysis of zircons: Most analyses were done on multi-grain fractions of zircon, which had had the outer portions of the grains removed by strong air abrasion in order to minimize the effects of post-crystallization Pb-loss. Analyses made prior to 1992 were carried out at the Geochronological Laboratory at the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa, Canada, using conventional isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spectrometry ID-TIMS methods for zircon and titanite analyses, respectively. Isotopic analyses were done on a Finnigan-MAT 261 variable multicollector mass spectrometer. Most U-Pb zircon analyses done after 1992 were carried out at the Pacific Centre for Isotopic and Geochemical Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. Analyses were by conventional ID-TIMS methods employing a VG 54R single collector mass spectrometer equipped with a Daly multiplier, and methods as described by Mortensen et al., (1995, 2008). Several U-Pb zircon samples were dated at UBC using laser-ablation-inductively-coupled-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) employing methods as described by Tafti et al., 2009. These analyses were done using a New Wave 213nm Nd-YAG laser coupled to a Thermo Finnigan Element2 high resolution ICP-MS.
