Abstract:
From 2017-2019, framework metallogenic studies were completed in the eastern Yukon-Tanana upland in eastern Alaska. Numerous previously undated plutons known or suspected to contain components of porphyry, epithermal, and intrusion-related gold systems and associated deposit types were sampled for age and zircon trace element determinations between the Black Mountain area and the Yukon border, north of the Tanana River and south of the Yukon River. A collection of 54 samples were collected by Douglas Kreiner (USGS, Alaska Science Center). Zircon grains were separated from each sample. The samples were examined by U-Pb analysis by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) in a USGS laboratory in Denver, CO. These geochronologic data are reported in a separate USGS data release. The zircon samples were later analyzed for trace element characteristics by Douglas Kreiner using the Sensitive High Resolution Ion Microprobe with Reverse-Geometry (SHRIMP-RG) at the Stanford-USGS laboratory in Palo Alto, California. The samples represent several discrete periods of magmatic activity, ranging from 56.5-360.3 Ma. The Paleozoic ages are of host rocks that were previously unidentified and collected for regional framework geology. The bulk of analyzed samples are between 68-72 Ma. Other specific periods of mineralization range from 100-112 Ma and 180-211 Ma.
Purpose:
The data were collected in support of deciphering the regional metallogenic framework of eastern interior Alaska. Specifically, the data were targeted towards presumed Mesozoic plutons with known or suspected magmatic-hydrothermal (e.g. porphyry, intrusion-related gold, or epithermal) styles of mineralization. This dataset was aimed at understanding the temporal and spatial evolution of mineralization across the region, and to better link mineralizing events to regional tectonic and magmatic evolution by exploring the evolution of magmatic conditions recorded in the zircon trace element signatures.

As detailed in the supplemental information file, SHRIMP-RG zircon trace element Supplemental_Info.pdf, the Ca, Na, Al, P, and K concentrations were used to screen for analyses that encountered non-zircon inclusions capable of influencing the data. The log of the above concentration data for each sample population was plotted versus Hf concentrations because Hf behaves compatibly in zircon. Outliers were flagged and excluded from the maximum, minimum, and median calculations for each sample in the sample summary table (geology_SHRIMPRG_SampleSummary_YTUpland_AK_Kreiner). Additionally, the chondrite-normalized REE pattern was evaluated for all analyses to determine any outliers resulting from non-zircon inclusions. A zircon standard reference material (MAD-1) was also analyzed for comparison to known concentrations for all elements analyzed.

Samples for this data set were collected from an area of the Yukon-Tanana Uplands area, with samples limited to the boundaries of the eastern sections of the Big Delta and Mount Hayes 1:250,000-scale quadrangles, the north and northeastern sections of the Gulkana and Nabesna 1:250,000-scale quadrangles, and the entirety of the Eagle and Tanacross 1:250,000-scale quadrangles, Alaska.
This data set does not include any measurements collected for the element boron for one specified mount (labeled configuration CHD094) due to instrument failure during that mount session.

Most coordinates were determined by handheld global positioning systems (GPS) in decimal degrees and are accurate to about 0.0001 degrees or about 20 feet. Zircon grains were separated from crushed and ground bulk rock samples using standard magnetic and heavy liquid techniques. Zircon grains were hand-picked under a binocular microscope and mounted in 2.54cm epoxy discs. The epoxy mounts were ground to expose grain interiors, polished, and imaged using cathodo luminescence (CL) for zircon on a scanning electronmicroscope (SEM) to identify internal structure (rims, core, etc.).
