Description:
Abstract:
This dataset consists of fossil diatom counts from sediment cores collected in coastal environments on Montague Island, Alaska, and analyzed at Virginia Tech University.
Purpose:
The data were collected, analyzed, and interpreted to estimate the amount of vertical land-level change caused by past earthquakes that ruptured the Patton Bay splay fault system, Alaska.

Process_Description:
Sediment cores collected by hand-driven auger at Montague Island, Alaska, were subsampled for fossil diatom analyses. Diatoms, a type of siliceous microalgae, were analyzed following the methods of Dura and Hemphill-Haley (2020). We sampled sediment cores in the lab at 1- to 2-cm depth intervals across stratigraphic contacts of interest. Diatoms were identified to the species level and a minimum of 300 diatom valves were counted in each of the 89 samples analyzed.

Entity_Type_Definition:
Folder with eight tables providing counts of the top 2% most abundant diatom species in sediment cores collected at Montague Island, Alaska. Each table represents a single core and includes a few rows of identifying information specific to the core. Data include diatom species counts at 1- to 2-cm depth intervals through the core. Presented in a Comma Separated Value (CSV) formatted table.
File naming convention: HL-[core number]_contact_[C], where: HL is the Hidden Lagoons locality; contact is a stratigraphic change from one type of sediment to another

Attribute_Definition:
Multiple columns with the total counts of each diatom species identified in the depth interval subsampled from a sediment core. The column label is the top and bottom depth of the interval as measured down from the top of the sediment core. Blank cells indicate that no diatoms of the species were encounters in the segment.
