Description:
Abstract:
This data release provides bathymetry data collected in 2015 for Eklutna Lake, Alaska. The data release consists of a 4 m grid, derived from processed and cleaned multibeam data. Depths were corrected using conductivity, temperature, and depth profiles collected during the surveys, and the data were cleaned of spurious returns.
Purpose:
This data was collected to better understand lakes as recorders of seismic events. There was no attempt to collect data shallower than -3.73 m. There were no previous swath bathymetry surveys of this lake.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Our data was compared to non-peer-reviewed data available at http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/SF_Lakes/, and our data are consistent. There is no formal accuracy report.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The data were examined for outliers and none were found. No data values are equal to -32767.
Completeness_Report:
We did not collect data in shallow areas, generally less than -3.73 m. Where data are absent, we did not collect data.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Prior use of this multibeam echosounder system indicates an overall positional accuracy of about 1 m. A formal accuracy assessment of the horizontal positional information in the dataset has not been conducted. The USGS research vessel Lutris was outfitted with a CSI Wireless-brand DGPS MAX unit for position of the vessel. The unit is rated to have sub-meter accuracy at 5 Hz. An iXBlue-brand Octans Subsea gyrocompass and motion sensor was used to determine sensor orientation and attitude. Accuracies of final products are a few decimeters due to water depth and total propagated uncertainties of the mapping systems, which include sonar system, position and motion compensation system, and navigation, as well as data processing that includes sounding cleaning, gridding, and datum transformations.

Process_Description:
In the summer of 2015, bathymetric data were acquired using a pole-mounted ELAC SeaBeam 1050 multibeam sonar (ELAC Nautik GmbH) on the USGS research vessel Lutris. This sonar consists of two 50 kHz transducer arrays, operated with a 120° combined swath angle. Sound velocity profiles of the water column were measured multiple times a day with a CastAway® CTD (depths up to 100 m; SonTek) and a CTD 48M (Sea & Sun Technology GmbH). The bathymetric data processing included outlier cleaning with HDPedit (ELAC Nautik GmbH) and incorporating the sound velocity profiles using HDPpost (ELAC Nautik GmbH). Visualization in the IVS 3D FledermausTM software (QPS BV) enabled detailed bathymetric data editing. The final bathymetry map has a 4 m grid spacing and a vertical accuracy of a few decimeters. Because the lake level seasonally fluctuates with maximum lake level at the end of summer and a minimum lake level around spring, the measured depths in the bathymetry maps are in reference to the mean lake level elevation of 258 m (NGVD29) during acquisition, as measured on the USGS Eklutna Lake stream gage (15278000). This corresponds to an elevation of 259.9 m in NAVD88 which is the recommended datum for this survey.

In preparation for the data release the included GeoTIFF was reprojected to geographic coordinates in WGS84 using the Project Raster tool in ArcGIS 10.8.1. This temporary GeoTIFF was then exported as an ASCII grid file using the Raster to ASCII tool in ArcGIS 10.8.1. The no data value in the ASCII grid is the default -9999.
