Abstract:
This dataset contains U-Pb isotopic data and associated ages of zircon grains from 27 sedimentary samples and one volcanic ash sample from the Cretaceous Torok and Nanushuk Formations. Seven samples were collected from outcrop and 21 samples were collected from archived core material from oil exploration wells on the North Slope of Arctic Alaska. Zircon grains were analyzed at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) between 2013 and 2018 using laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) techniques. The study was funded by the Energy Resources Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Purpose:
The dataset was collected to ascertain the provenance and age of the Cretaceous Torok-Nanushuk depositional sequence. Detailed interpretations of these data and a discussion of the results and implications of the study can be found in Lease and others, 2022.

Zircon mineral separation was performed using standard crushing, magnetic, and heavy liquid procedures. Random representative splits of detrital zircon grains were mounted for sandstone samples, whereas pristine zircon grains were hand-picked for the volcanic ash sample. Grains were mounted in epoxy and sanded and polished for analysis by laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS).

LA-ICPMS analyses were performed at the University of California, Santa Barbara using a Photon Machines Analyte 193-nm Excimer laser and Nu Instruments Plasma HR MC-ICPMS using standard methodology (Kylander-Clark and others, 2013). Analyses targeted the cores of randomly-selected detrital zircon grains that were free of cracks and inclusions using a spot size of 15 um and repetition rate of 4 Hz. The 91500 reference zircon was used as the primary standard and GJ1, Plesovice, and Peixe were used as secondary standards to monitor data accuracy. Data reduction was performed using the Iolite software (Paton and others, 2010) and age calculations were performed using Isoplot (Ludwig, 2012).
