Abstract:
This set of data files are the appendices for paper titled Transgressive-regressive cycles in the metalliferous, oil shale-bearing Heath Formation (Upper Mississippian), central Montana. The dataset consists of 8 appendices, including a histogram of solid bitumen and vitrinite Ro values, gas chromatograms, isotopic data, organic and inorganic geochemical analyses, and x-ray diffraction mineralogy data.
Purpose:
This data was collected, analyzed, and interpreted in order to improve the understanding of the depositional setting of the Heath Formation, which is known for containing mudrocks highly enriched in zinc, vanadium, molybedenum, nickel, and other metals, and source rocks for oil.

This data set includes a variety of analyses and descriptions from multiple samples taken from eight different wells. The data are new, with the exception of all the data in Appendix_6, which come from data files found on the USGS Core Research Center, CRC website (https://geology.cr.usgs.gov/crc/).

Horizontal positions were obtained from CRC well catalog. https://geology.cr.usgs.gov/crc. The PLSS data was translated to latitude and longitude values; accuracy +/- 500 meters.

Process_Description:
The location data for the wells was obtained from the USGS CRC database. The locational information was provided in both PLSS (Public Land Survey System), and latitude and longitude (datum not provided, however we assume NAD27). The latitude and longitude positions were compared to the PLSS township and range description. All but one location seemed reasonable. For the single sample that did not match, we recalculated a latitude and longitude to fit the PLSS descrption.
