Description:
Abstract:
This data set provides capture information and body size measurements of adult and gosling Greater White-fronted Geese captured at three study sites on the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska, 2012-2014.
Purpose:
The data were collected to assess gosling growth rates. Data for webtagged goslings were used to examine rates of gosling growth. Data for adult birds were used to calculate asymptotic size for comparison of gosling growth with other goose species and populations. Data for unmarked goslings were not used in the manuscript.

Methodology_Description:
We searched for nests on foot in a systematic manner throughout the incubation period and revisited nests at 5-10 day intervals and again at hatch. During hatch we marked goslings in the nest bowl with uniquely coded web tags; development at the time of marking ranged from pipped eggs to dry goslings. Hatch of an entire clutch typically requires about 24 hours, thus ages of marked goslings were known to +/- 1 day. During each year at each study site, we trapped up to 20 incubating females on their nest at or just prior to hatch. These females were marked with a plastic neck collar and a 13 g VHF transmitter, attached using a subcutaneous anchor (2012) or glued to the neck collar (2013, 2014). We conducted captures of brood flocks during early August of each year. We located most brood flocks by tracking marked females using aerial telemetry, but also captured other brood flocks when observed in and around the study sites. In most cases, we captured flocks by herding flightless (molting) adults and their young into a corral using a helicopter. However, when flock size was small (i.e., only one or two broods), we landed a helicopter nearby and captured geese by hand. For all birds handled, we categorized age as gosling (local) or adult (after hatch year), determined sex by cloacal examination, recorded weight (+/-1.0 g) using a digital scale, measured exposed culmen and total tarsus (+/-0.1 mm) using dial calipers, and measured length of the ninth primary feather (+/-1.0 mm)using a ruler. We marked birds with standard numbered U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) metal tarsus bands and all birds in a given brood flock were released together. We conducted brood captures at study sites in the same order as hatch, starting at Chipp South where hatch was earliest and finishing at Point Lonely where hatch was latest. Effort at each site generally varied with brood density; captures were conducted for about 1 day at Chipp South, 2 days at Chipp North, and 2-3 days at Point Lonely. All procedures were approved by USGS Alaska Science Center's Animal Care and Use Committee (2011-11) and were authorized by federal migratory bird banding permit (20022), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (MB789758), and Bureau of Land Management (BLM AK FF095718) permits.
