Abstract:

These morphometric data are in two tables from surfbirds (adults and chicks) captured at two locations in southcentral Alaska, 1997-1999.

Purpose:

These data were collected to document basic body measurements of adult surfbirds and to quantify growth rates of surfbird chicks.

We captured adults at both locations using mist nets and nest traps during spring and summer months. Each bird was marked with a USGS metal band, weighed, and measured. Measures included total head, culmen, diagonal tarsus, wing chord, cloaca width, and fat index. Sex was determined by behavior and genetically (Griffiths et al 1998)

We visited nests at hatch and banded the chicks with uniquely numbered USGS metal bands. We attempted to recapture and remeasure chicks at three-day intervals. For chick growth, we collected repeat measures of chick body mass, tarsus, bill, and 10th primary during time period from hatch until fledge.
