Sampling information provided by collectors was cross-checked and verified to match the accompanying data. All laboratory techniques were performed using sterile procedures. While DNA extractions from single feathers cannot be duplicated due to low yields of initial extractions, quality control (QC) for eggshell membranes included a minimum of 10% re-extraction and PCR replication for each locus. Additionally, for feathers, in many cases duplicate feathers from the same nest were available and provided internal quality control described in Safine et al. (2020). All duplicate characterizations of the same individual (eggshell membrane duplicates and paired blood/feather individuals) resulted in concordant data. Species identification by collectors were informally verified by confirming genetic "signatures" (e.g. microsatellite size) fell within expected values for the species.

For microsatellite loci, reported allele sizes were reviewed to confirm they conform to expected distributions (e.g. dinucleotide repeats with 1 base pair differences were reviewed on gel images with laboratory personnel, gaps in allele sizes were reviewed, and single occurrences of an allele size were scrutinized). Any inconsistencies in allele scores were resolved with additional replicates when possible. Tests for null alleles and allelic dropout were implemented in MicroChecker (van Oosterhout et al 2004) and GENECAP (Wilberg and Dreher 2004).

DNA was extracted from blood and membranes by a modified salt extraction technique (Medrano et al 1990; Sonsthagen et al 2004) and from feathers following Talbot et al (2011). Ten individuals had both blood and feather samples to test robustness of the chosen suite of markers for use in feathers. Two to five feathers from 224 nests were extracted individually (i.e. not pooled in case of multiple individuals, but presumed to be from a single adult female). Eggshell membranes from 75 nests were extracted.

Initial microsatellite allele sizes were determined by scoring based on PCR product size relative to an M13 DNA sequence ladder using Gene Profiler 4.05 (Scanalytics, Inc., Fairfax, VA). Subsequent gels included these known size individuals from which relative sizes of unknown individuals were assigned using Gene Profiler 4.05. For this reason, these microsatellite data cannot be combined with data generated outside the USGS Alaska Science Center without molecular size calibration between laboratories. Strict review of pooled data prior to pooling into a single composite genotype for one individual are described in Safine et al (2020) and followed recommendations set forth in Waits and Paetkau (2005). Tests for null alleles and allelic dropout were implemented in MicroChecker (van Oosterhout et al 2004) and again downstream processing in GENECAP (Wilberg and Dreher 2004).
