Description:
Abstract:
This data set contains information (in two tables) on nesting habitat and nest survival for American (Pluvialis dominica) and Pacific (P. fulva) Golden-Plovers monitored at seven study sites across an elevational gradient (28−416 m) on the Seward Peninsula in northwestern Alaska during the summers of 2012 and 2013. We used principal components analysis to reduce habitat measurements into two components that represented major habitat features.
Purpose:
These data provide the basis for a study to (1) quantify habitat features important for nest-site selection for American and Pacific Golden-Plovers on the Seward Peninsula, Alaska, and (2) evaluate the importance of habitat characteristics and temporal factors potentially influencing nest survival of these species.

Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
We systematically searched our study areas for nests from late May through late July by walking evenly spaced transects, approximately 20 m apart to ensure full overlap, and following adults exhibiting nesting behaviors back to their nests. Nest locations were recorded using handheld GPS units. We marked nests with small rock cairns located 2 m from the nest to enable the relocation of nests while avoiding the attraction of predators.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
For each nest, we measured habitat characteristics within one quadrat (0.5 m × 0.5 m) centered on the nest site (to represent microhabitat at the nest) and a second quadrat at a paired point randomly selected from within a 350-m radius of the nest site (to represent habitat available in the territory, which is typically 10−50 ha in size). Within each quadrat, we estimated the percent cover and mean height of the following habitat components: alder (Alnus spp.), willow (>50 cm), dwarf willow (≤50 cm), dwarf birch, cinquefoil (Potentilla spp.), mountain-avens (Dryas spp.), ericaceous plants (Ericaceae), non-graminoid herbaceous plants, graminoids, moss, lichen, rock, and bare ground. We also estimated percent cover of water and detritus (i.e. leaf litter). We recorded cover using cover classes (0, 1–5, 6–25, 26–50, 51–75, 76–95, and 96–100%). We sampled habitat in late July and early August after nesting was completed to avoid disturbing nesting birds. Thus, measurements were more representative of mature seasonal growth of the vegetation than characteristics at the time of nest initiation or depredation, particularly for height of graminoid vegetation; however, measurements should index the relative height and cover of vegetation at selected vs. random sites given the directional increase in plant growth in this system (cf. Latif et al. 2012). Furthermore, relative comparisons should be minimally biased because of the highly synchronized breeding each season.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
When we discovered a nest, we floated the eggs to estimate the incubation stage. We then monitored the nest every 4–7 days throughout incubation (24−29 days from laying of the last egg to hatching of the first until eggs were within 5 days of their earliest predicted hatch date, after which we visited them every 1–2 days until hatch occurred or the nest failed. We classified a nesting attempt as successful if at least one egg hatched or if pipped eggshell fragments were found in the nest cup. A nesting attempt was considered failed if (1) a depredation event was observed directly (only 2 of 45 depredation events); (2) eggs disappeared prior to the estimated hatch date and there was no sign of hatched eggshell parts or adults attending young (nest assumed lost to predation); or (3) eggs that had previously been incubated were found cold and abandoned in the nest cup with no sign of attending adults (nest abandoned).

Process_Description:
To determine percent cover of each habitat component within a quadrat, we assigned the midpoint of its cover class for analysis (0, 2.5, 15, 37.5, 62.5, 85, or 97.5%); we excluded alder and water because they were rarely encountered. We collapsed height measurements into a single variable that represented the maximum mean height of any vegetation class, hereafter vegetation height. Using all quadrats from nest and random sites, we then conducted a principal components analysis with function 'prcomp' in program R (R Core Team 2019) to reduce highly correlated habitat variables into fewer components that represented major habitat features. We used the generalized cross-validation (GCV) approximation in function 'estim_ncp' of R package 'FactoMineR' to determine the optimal number of components to use, based on the minimum error of prediction. We retained the top 2 principal components (PCs).

This table includes the elevation and the cover and height measurements of 13 cover types within 0.5 m × 0.5 m quadrats centered on each nest and at a paired random site within 350 m of each nest (to represent habitat available within the nesting territory) of American Golden-Plovers (Pluvialis dominica; n = 54) and Pacific Golden-Plovers (P. fulva; n = 58) breeding at 7 study sites on the Seward Peninsula, Alaska, during 2012 and 2013. All habitat measurements were recorded between 15 July and 17 August 2013, after brood-rearing was completed, to avoid disturbing breeding birds. Each row represents one nest site or one paired random site. One American Golden-Plover nest (2012RSG01) is missing data from its paired random site. Presented in a Comma Separated Value (CSV) formatted table.

Entity_Type:
Entity_Type_Label: goldenPlover_survival_sewardPen_handel_2012_2013
Entity_Type_Definition:
This table includes the attributes analyzed for nest survival of American Golden-Plovers (Pluvialis dominica; n = 47) and Pacific Golden-Plovers (P. fulva; n = 53) breeding at 7 study sites on the Seward Peninsula, Alaska, during 2012 and 2013. Data have been formatted for analysis in Program MARK. Nests exclude those lost to abandonment (n = 9) due to possible disturbance effects from trapping of adults. Each row represents one nest. Binary variables were created to indicate if the study site for a given nest was (1) or was not (0) at Feather River, Blume Creek, Woolley Lagoon, Mile 16, Mile 8, or Anvil Mountain. The reference study site at Nugget Creek was indicated by values of 0 for all of the other site variables. Presented in a Comma Separated Value (CSV) formatted table.

Attribute:
Attribute_Label: Nest_ID
Attribute_Definition:
Each nest was given a unique 13-digit alphanumeric code. The first 2 digits are a forward slash and an asterisk to denote a comment field for Program MARK. The next 4 digits represent year the nest was found (2012 or 2013), the next 3 digits represent the initials of the researcher who found the nest, and the next 2 digits are a sequential number of the nests the researcher found that year. The final 2 digits are an asterisk and a forward slash to denote a comment field for Program MARK. Corresponds to the "NestID" attribute in the other table of this data package.

Principal component 1 score for this nest from principal components analysis of habitat data from all nest sites and paired random sites combined (see plover_habitat_sewardPen_handel.csv included in this data package). Analysis used function 'prcomp' in program R (R Core Team 2019) to reduce 15 individual habitat variables into principal components that represented habitat features. Original variables included elevation, cover class values for 13 cover types (lichen, rock, bareground, moss, ericaceous, dwarfwillow, dryas, cinquefoil, herbaceous, grass, willow, and detritus), and maxavght (maximum value of the estimated average height measurements across all 13 cover types). Attributes were measured within a 0.5 m × 0.5 m quadrat around each nest site and at a paired random site within 350 m of the nest site.

Attribute_Definition:
Probability that a site was a nest site, based on habitat at the site. This nest-site selection coefficient was derived from the species-specific conditional logistic model of nest sites vs. paired random sites within territories. We used function 'clogit' from package 'survival' in program R (R Core Team 2019) for the analysis. Variables in the model included elevation, cover class values for 13 cover types (lichen, rock, bareground, moss, ericaceous, dwarfwillow, dryas, cinquefoil, herbaceous, grass, willow, and detritus), and maxavght (maximum value of the estimated average height measurements across all 13 cover types). Attributes were measured within a 0.5 m × 0.5 m quadrat around each nest site and at a paired random site within 350 m of the nest site. See Overduijn et al., (2020) for additional details.
