Description:
Abstract:
These data are in one table of territory occupancy data for loons and presence/absence data for fish species based on survey information for Pacific (Gavia pacifica) and Yellow-billed Loon (G. adamsii) and five species of fish (Alaska blackfish, arctic grayling, broad whitefish, least cisco, ninespine stickleback) from freshwater lakes on the Arctic Coastal Plain in northern Alaska, 2011-2014. We surveyed lakes in northern Alaska to understand how fish communities may impact the occupancy and breeding success of loons. Data were collected as part of the U.S. Geological Survey Changing Arctic Ecosystems Initiative to understand the response of wildlife to rapid physical changes taking place in the Arctic.
Purpose:
These data were collected as part of a multi-year study on loon breeding ecology. Yellow-billed Loons were under consideration for endangered species protection while the study took place, and oil and gas development on the breeding areas is slated to increase. Identifying important habitat characteristics that promote territory occupancy and reproduction are important for understand population dynamics, especially for species of conservation concern such as Yellow-billed Loons.

Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Lakes were systematically surveyed by foot from approximately mid-June to mid-August to identify loon territories, determine lake occupancy, and to find loon nests. Researchers walked the perimeter of each lake and all islands and noted the number of loons of each species present on the lake. Lakes (or portions of lakes for those with multiple territories) were classified as one of three types: unoccupied by loons, occupied and pair present, or occupied with a nest.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
We used three gear types to sample lakes for fish: gill nets, minnow traps, and hoop nets. Fish sampling followed methods employed by Haynes et al. (2013) and began once lakes were open following ice breakup (July) and continued through mid-August in 2013 and 2014.

Process_Description:
Loon lake occupancy and breeding status were modeled across four years (2011–2014). We collapsed loon territory occupancy into five states: unoccupied (state 0), occupied by territorial Pacific Loons (state 1), occupied by territorial Pacific Loons with reproduction (e.g., chicks at least three weeks old; state 2), occupied by territorial Yellow-billed Loons (state 3), or occupied by territorial Yellow-billed Loons with reproductions (state 4).
