Description:
Abstract:
These data are in nine tables relating to three species of arctic breeding geese studied on the Colville River Delta, Alaska, 2011-2014. The tables provide: 1-2) spring migration and arrival dates, 3) pre-nesting intervals, 4) nest initiation dates, 5) goose esophageal contents, 6) egg stable isotope ratios, 7) goose tissue stable isotope ratios, 8) forage plant stable isotope ratios, and 9) egg endogenous reserve estimates.
Purpose:
We examined relationships between migration chronology and nutrient allocation to eggs for three species of geese (Black Brant, White-fronted Geese, and Snow Geese) that nested sympatrically on the arctic coastal plain of Alaska, 2011–2015. We measured stable isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N) in eggs, adult tissue, and forage plants to identify nutrient sources and allocation, and used light-archival geolocators to identify the date of goose arrival in the Arctic and to measure the length of the pre-nesting interval of females between their arrival to the Arctic and the onset of incubation.

ITIS currently lists Snow Geese in the genus Chen. However, the most current taxonomic designation by the American Ornithological Society's (AOU) Check-list of North American Birds lists Snow Geese in the genus Anser. Here, we follow the current AOU designation as described in: Chesser, R.T., Burns, K.J., Cicero, C., Dunn, J.L., Kratter, A.W., Lovette, I.J., Rasmussen, P.C., Remsen, J.V., Jr., Rising, J.D., Stotz, D.F., Winker, K. 2017. Individual sample ID's, collection dates, sampling locations, band IDs, and other values were cross-checked and verified against field worksheets. Location estimates from geolocators are used to broadly define wintering, staging areas, and arctic arrival. The dates of migratory movement and incubation activity are determined by changes in the pattern of light and shading as recorded by geolocators. Accuracy estimates of the stable isotope measures are provided with the Supporting Information which accompanies the primary publication (Hupp et al 2018)

Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
We attached light-archival geolocators to female geese in order to determine general wintering areas and measure the interval between their arrival in the Arctic and the onset of incubation. Between 2011 and 2013 we attached geolocators to Snow Geese, Brant, and White-fronted Geese, mainly by capturing females on their nests during late incubation. We used MK-18H (British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, UK) and C65K (Migrate Technology, Cambridge, UK) geolocators that recorded light intensity at 5-minute intervals. Geolocators were secured to uniquely coded, plastic tarsus bands that we attached to geese. To recover the geolocators, we used spotting scopes to locate marked females on their nests and recaptured them with bow traps 1–3 years after initial capture (2012–2014). We also recovered some geolocators during late summer brood drives and from hunters.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Each year 2011–2013, we collected 7–10 adult females of each goose species prior to nest initiation. We removed food items from esophagai, and identified the plant species and plant parts consumed (aboveground vs belowground). Based on dried mass (+0.01 g), we calculated aggregate proportion of mass of each food item to summarize the pre-laying diet for each species. Upon collection of geese we removed 1–2 g of tissue from several areas of abdominal fat and pectoralis to serve as source material for isotopic analysis of endogenous lipid and protein reserves, respectively. Tissue samples were frozen within several hours of collection.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
We collected plant species that were consumed by geese in the areas where we had collected birds, or in nearby habitats that were similar. We collected 8–10 samples (~0.5–1 g/sample) of most forage plant species in each year from 2011–2013. However, some species were not collected until 2014. All samples were collected in the last week of May or first week of June. Plant samples were kept frozen until they were analyzed in the laboratory.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
We collected the apparent first laid (most stained) and last laid (least stained) egg from 15 nests of each goose species annually from 2011–2013, except in 2012 when we collected eggs from 10 White-fronted Goose nests. We mainly collected eggs from nests with completed clutches, based either on embryo development or from records of clutch size on previous visits. Most (84%) eggs were collected within the first 3 days of incubation and no eggs were collected from nests with embryos >5 days of age. After collection, we heated eggs in boiling water for 20 minutes to solidify contents. The eggs were then frozen until they were shipped to the laboratory. Prior to isotopic analysis, we removed the shell and separated the egg into the yolk and albumen.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Lab
Methodology_Description:
We freeze-dried goose pectoralis, lipid, and egg tissues to constant mass. Plant samples were rinsed in deionized water and freeze dried. Dried samples were ground to a powder in a mortar and pestle. We extracted lipids from the powdered pectoralis and yolk using a solution of 2:1 chloroform:methanol and extracts from were evaporated under a fume hood to recover lipids for further isotope analysis. Egg tissues were separated into the lipid-free yolk, yolk lipids, and albumen. We analyzed samples for δ13C and δ15N using continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (CFIRMS). Only δ13C was measured for yolk lipids.
For δ13C and δ15N analyses, ~1.0 mg of material was combusted online using a Eurovector 3000 (Milan, Italy–www.eurovector.it) elemental analyzer. The resulting CO2 and N2 gases were separated by gas chromatography (GC) and introduced into a Nu Horizon (Nu Instruments, Wrexham, UK–www.nu-ins.com) triple-collector isotope-ratio mass-spectrometer via an open split and compared to a pure CO2 or N2 reference gas. We expressed stable nitrogen (15N/14N) and carbon (13C/12C) isotope ratios in δ notation, as parts per thousand (‰) deviation from the primary standards, atmospheric AIR and Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB). Using previously calibrated internal laboratory standards (powdered keratin [BWB II: δ13C = -20.0‰, δ15N = +14.1‰ and gelatin:[δ13C= -13.6‰, δ15N = +4.7‰), within-run precision for δ15N and δ13C measurements was ~ ± 0.15‰ (n = 5).

Describes method of 'candling' eggs to observe embryo development.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
We used the R program SGAT (https://github.com/SWotherspoon/SGAT ) to estimate daily locations of geese marked with geolocators, based on times of sunrise and sunset. We calibrated geolocator data based on sunrise and sunset times from mid- to late-August on the Colville River, prior to departure of marked birds from their breeding area, and when their approximate locations were known. Based on a Bayesian analysis, the program estimated the daily likelihood of detection for a geolocator in each 0.25 x 0.25 degree block of latitude and longitude of the species’ range.
Process_Date: Unknown
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
We determined the date that tracked birds arrived in the Arctic, based on the onset of 24-hour daylight as detected by geolocators. After this date, they could not be tracked due to the absence of sunrise and sunset. We define the Arctic as latitudes >65° N, the mean latitude at which geolocators were last detected. We estimated day length at the latitude of last daily location estimate prior to arrival in Arctic. Some females completed multiple migrations before their geolocators were recovered, yielding >1 year of data. To analyze distribution on spring staging areas, we randomly selected one year of data for females whose geolocators recorded >1 spring migration. However, all data were used for annual estimates of spring staging chronology. Only females who attempted to nest, based on shading of their geolocators, are included in this file. Because their migration chronology potentially differed, females that apparently made no attempt to nest were not included in this analysis.
Process_Date: Unknown
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
For all females with tracking devices that nested, we determined whether they likely initiated rapid follicle growth (RFG) before or after they arrived in the Arctic. Starting date of follicle development was derived from estimates for duration of RFG in Hamann et al 1986 for snow geese and Alisauskas and Ankney 1992 for brant and white-fronted geese, egg laying rates in Alisauskas and Ankney 1992, and based on the assumption that incubation began at the mid-point of the egg laying for brant (Flint et al 1995) and with the penultimate egg for snow geese and white-fronted geese (Poussart et al 2000). We used observed clutch size to calculate the onset of RFG for marked females found on nests, and assumed a 4-egg clutch, the median clutch size for all species from 2012–2014, for females whose nests were not observed.
