Description:
Abstract:
These data are in two tables related to surveys conducted on wintering Emperor Geese in Alaska. Surveys counting the number of wintering Emperor Geese were conducted on Shemya Island in 2003 and 2016, and on Adak Island in 2016-2017. Data on abdominal profile indices (body condition) of Emperor Geese were collected on Shemya Island in 2016, on Adak Island in 2016-2017, and on Kodiak Island in 2015-2017.
Purpose:
These data were collected as part of a multi-year study on Emperor Geese wintering ecology. Count data were collected to compare with surveys that were conducted beginning in the 1980s to identify potential local changes in emperor goose wintering populations. Data on abdominal profile indices were collected to quantify body condition of wintering Emperor Geese.

ITIS currently lists Emperor Geese in the genus Chen. However, the most current taxonomic designation by the American Ornithological Society's (AOU) Check-list of North American Birds ( http://checklist.aou.org/taxa ) considers Emperor Geese in the genus Anser.
Here, we follow the current AOU designation as described in: Chesser, R.T., Burns, K.J., Cicero, C., Dunn, J.L., Kratter, A.W., Lovette, I.J., Rasmussen, P.C., Remsen, J.V., Jr., Rising, J.D., Stotz, D.F., Winker, K. 2017. Fifty-eighth supplement to the American Ornithological Society's Check-list of North American Birds. The Auk:134(3)751-773 https://doi.org/10.1642/AUK-17-72.1
Taxonomic_Procedures:
Species were identified by skilled observers in the field based on general appearance of feathers and plumage, behavior, and vocalization.
Taxonomic_Completeness:
Taxonomy is complete for all samples. No voucher specimens were collected.

Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Numbers of Emperor Geese were counted along established road survey routes on Adak Island (Rojek et al. 1995), and Shemya Island (Byrd and Scharf 2003). Along each survey route, observers used binoculars or a spotting scope to count all Emperor Geese in view.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Abdominal profile indices of Emperor Geese were scored using a 6-category scale (Féret et al. 2005) at Adak, Shemya, and Kodiak Islands. Flocks of geese were scored opportunistically during ground surveys and we attempted to control for the effect of posture by only scoring geese that were standing upright, perpendicular to the observer with their heads up (Owen 1981).
