Description:
Abstract:
This dataset contains lab-measured percent lipid and fatty acid composition data from Pacific walruses harvested in waters near Saint Lawrence Island. Each row indicates data from a single layer from a blubber core sample collected from one body site (flank, rump, or sternum) from one walrus harvested by Native Alaskans during the spring walrus hunts of 2007 - 2010. Blubber cores were divided into two roughly equal depths (inner and outer) and individually characterized. Results are proportion lipid content of the sub-sample mass and proportional abundance of each fatty acid of total fatty acids identified in the sub-sample on a wet-weight basis. Some samples were found to be inadequate due to lack of anatomical landmarks and do not have laboratory values indicated. Some samples are flagged as being incomplete based on notes from the laboratory.

Siberian Yu'pik walrus hunters residing in the communities of Saint Lawrence Island collected samples for this dataset ancillary to their normal walrus harvest efforts. Blubber was cut from freshly harvested walruses such that the sample was bounded by muscle and skin to ensure the full depth of the blubber layer was sampled. The blubber sample was sealed in a plastic bag and brought to shore where it was placed in a household freezer. At the end of the sampling season, samples were transported for longer-term storage in a commercial freezer (-20 C). All samples were subsequently packaged with dry ice and express-shipped to the lab for analysis (Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia). Research and sample collection were conducted in accordance with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Division of Management Authority, permit numbers MA801652-3 through MA801652-6.

These data were received in two components: (1) field data sheets provided by harvest samplers and (2) digital spreadsheets provided by the analysis laboratory. USGS merged these two data streams to create a single flat file with one record for each layer within a blubber sample from each sampling location of each sampled walrus. The resulting flat file was cross referenced back to the original sampling records and the original laboratory records to ensure data integrity.

If no data was available in a field for a sample, such as when a sample was found to be incomplete when received at the laboratory, the text string "NA" is placed in the field. Zeros within a laboratory analysis field indicate a reading of zero or below the resolution of the laboratory equipment, which was 0.01 for the fatty acid composition readings.
