Abstract:
Provided here are two vector geospatial datasets that characterize the distribution of eelgrass (Zostera marina) and seaweeds in waters adjacent to Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska. These data were derived from: (1) aerial photo imagery acquired on five different summer days 2005-2013 and (2) satellite imagery (Ikonos-2 and Quickbird-2) acquired on five different summer days 2002-2004. Additionally, the ortho-rectified photomosaics of the aerial photographs used for analysis are provided.
Purpose:
Coastal waters adjacent to the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge contain extensive beds of eelgrass, but the status and trends of distribution are unknown. This dataset provides baseline information on the spatial extent and distribution of eelgrass and seaweed in waters adjacent to the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge enabling a monitoring program for these coastal habitats that support many species including waterfowl.

Ground-truth data were collected during field surveys and are reported in separate U.S. Geological Survey data releases (Ward 2021, Ward et al 2022). In July 2010, ground-truth data were collected at numerous points in three bays : Nanvak, Chagvan, and Goodnews.
In short, survey points were distributed across each of these embayments using a systematic design and accessed points by boat using a global positioning system (GPS) unit. Points were sampled by snorkeling in dry suits during high tide. At each point, substrate type and depth and percent cover of eelgrass and seaweeds were estimated within four 0.25 square meters quadrats.
We used the survey points to guide selection of training polygons for each classification category (Ozesmi and Bauer, 2002). This approach enabled the selection of training data across thousands of pixels in each of the images, greatly improving the accuracy of the classifications.

Aerial photography was acquired by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2005-2013. All imagery was obtained during low tides and peak seasonal abundance of eelgrass (July-August). The images were taken at an altitude of 2,500–7,000 feet, depending on the size of the site, using a Nikon D200 color digital camera mounted to the belly port of a Cessna 206. The images were mosaicked together, georectified to a larger base image, and classified to 3 land cover types: eelgrass, mud/sand, and channel.
