Description:
Abstract:
This dataset consists of one table with predator disturbance information from the Common Murre breeding season (June-August) from 2016-2020 on Gull Island, Kachemak Bay, Alaska.
Purpose:
These data were collected to better understand the effects of predator disturbance on Common Murre breeding success following the north Pacific marine heatwave.
Supplemental_Information:
These data are part of an ongoing study in lower Cook Inlet, Alaska to assess the recent status of forage fish and seabirds, in comparison to baseline findings for the region (1995-1999).

FIELD:
Time-lapse cameras fitted with wide-angle lenses were deployed near the Coast Guard marker on Gull Island in each year (2016-2020) to capture still images of Common Murre nests. While multiple cameras were deployed, one camera was used for analysis while an additional camera was placed nearby as a backup, with staggered start dates, or a differing photo frequency depending on the year. The cameras were positioned to encompass most of the main nesting area at this location, but the view did vary from 30-100 nests depending on camera placement. Cameras were collected at the end of each nesting season (late September) and the photographs were analyzed.

Process_Description:
LAB:
Photographs were manually analyzed for disturbance and disturbance-associated predation events. Photos were stitched together into a single video file and watched by a trained observer. Disturbances were recorded when birds flushed from the colony and ended when greater than 75 percent of the birds who left the colony returned. Birds were recorded as actively nesting if an egg was seen or if a bird remained in incubating posture throughout multiple flush events. Egg predation events were recorded, as well as egg predators, when possible.
