Description:
Abstract:
The North Pacific Pelagic Seabird Database (NPPSD) is maintained by the USGS Alaska Science Center and includes survey transect data designed and conducted by numerous partners primarily to census seabirds at sea. The data provided here relate to observations of marine birds and mammals observed during at-sea surveys throughout the North Pacific including the Arctic Ocean, Beaufort Sea, Chukchi Sea, Bering Sea, Sea of Okhotsk, and Barents Sea. This data release contains 5 tables including observation data, survey locations, taxonomic designations of observed birds and mammals, summary information about each dataset added to the database, and a table showing changes made to the database from version 4.0 to 4.1.
Purpose:
To provide information on the presence/absence, total numbers and densities, and spatial and temporal distribution of seabirds and marine mammals across the North Pacific Ocean. We have additional information from the equatorial Pacific Ocean and the Arctic Ocean.
Supplemental_Information:
The North Pacific Pelagic Seabird Database (NPPSD) was created in 2005 to consolidate data on the oceanic distribution of marine bird species in the North Pacific. Most of these data were collected using at-sea strip-transect surveys within defined areas and at known locations. The NPPSD also contains observations of other bird species and marine mammals. The original NPPSD combined data from 465 surveys conducted between 1973 and 2002, primarily in waters adjacent to Alaska. These surveys included 61,195 transect segments with location, environment, and metadata information, and the data were organized in a flat-file format. In revising the NPPSD (2.0), our goals were to add new datasets, to make significant improvements to database functionality and to provide the database online. The NPPSD 2.0 included data from a broadened geographic range within the North Pacific, including new observations made offshore of the Russian Federation, Japan, Korea, British Columbia (Canada), Oregon, and California. These data were imported into a relational database, proofed, and structured in a common format. The NPPSD 2.0 contained 351,674 transect segments collected between 1973 and 2012, representing a total sampled area of 270,259 square kilometers, and extended the time series of samples in some areas-notably the Bering Sea-to four decades. It contained observations of 16,988,138 birds and 235,545 marine mammals. The third edition of the NPPSD corrected several data duplication errors, updated the taxonomy to the current standard, and added additional data collected since 2012. The NPPSD 3.0 included 460,2985 transect segments; a 30% increase in the number of transects. It contained observations of 20,098,635 birds and 365,227 marine mammals. In the fourth edition of the NPPSD, we re-engineered the data from an MS Access database into MS SQL Server. This corrected database duplication by remodeling its structure, which streamlined existing redundancies. Efficiencies were realized in several categories, such as contributors, species, and behaviors. The NPPSD version 4.0 contained 489,557 transect segments collected over the span of 50 years (from 1973 to 2022) and included observations of 20,948,570 birds of 258 species and 391,551 mammals of 41 species. In the NPPSD version 4.1, we corrected several data duplication errors and addressed multiple other issues in the database. Version 4.1 contains 486,621 transect segments and observations of 20,665,731 birds of 258 species and 388,872 mammals of 41 species. Additional details of updates to the NPPSD are provided in the versionHistory.txt file included with this data package.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Field data collected by USGS (after 1993) were collected using a digital data recorder. Daily records were reviewed nightly to correct miss-transcriptions and reconcile data with handwritten notes. We had no way to determine the level of quality control applied to data sets contributed from other sources as they varied and were rarely documented. Once provided to us, contributed datasets were reviewed to check for attribute consistency and logic. When inconsistencies were found we contacted the contributor to resolve errors. Bias due to observers as well as attraction and avoidance of observing vessels was outside of our control. All surveys were conducted by trained observers. Data may be used to generate presence/absence, trends in and estimates of relative abundance and to examine patterns in temporal and spatial distribution, however, due to the opportunistic nature of the surveys, both in space and time, these data may not be sufficient to determine absolute abundance. Note that the species code list has been updated in version 4 and version 4.1 of the NPPSD database. Over the 50 years represented by the NPPSD version 4 and 4.1, both common and scientific names have undergone some changes. Additionally, individual researchers commonly created their own unique codes for species. All of these were cross-walked and the provided tables are consistent.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Although many of the variables do not have set limits, most have logical constraints, e.g. sea state must be numeric, between 0-12. Note that many of the data fields have blank (NA) values for various fields if no value was supplied by contributors. The taxonomic list was checked with lists of marine bird and mammal taxa for the North Pacific region. Unusual identifications were confirmed with the contributor.
Completeness_Report:
Few contributed surveys included all variables in the database; however, all survey data were required to have latitude, longitude, and species observations, and most transects contained sample area or some way to calculate sample area (e.g. transect width x transect length). If environmental data (e.g. sea state, weather) was provided it is in the database; blank (NA) values should be treated as missing.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Horizontal positions were collected using Loran-C (1974-1993) and GPS (1994-2022). Data collected using Loran-C was collected using NAD27 and were converted to WGS84. Consequently, there may be some variations in locational accuracy of Loran-C data during data shifting. Data collected after 1993 were assumed to have been collected using NAD83 or WGS84 and hence were not converted.
Each sample transect is located using a single point. Many of the early surveys (pre-1984) only recorded each transect's starting x- and y-coordinates. Most of the later surveys included both start and stop locations and transect locations are centroids. The field "loc_method" in the location table designates whether the start or the centroid of the sample transect was used for the observation location.

At-sea boat surveys of marine birds were completed using strip transects.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Aerial survey methodologies were only partially standardized. In general, aerial surveys were flown at 30-50 m and 75-100 kph depending on the aircraft. Transect widths varied between 50-150 m and all birds observed within that band were counted.

Methodology_Description:
The USGS and collaborators developed a robust data-logging application, SeaLog, to help facilitate the efficient collection of at-sea survey data. This program was designed to work with a data proofing and formatting tool, QA/QSea. More information can be found on the NPPSD webpage (https://www.usgs.gov/centers/alaska-science-center/science/north-pacific-pelagic-seabird-database), and the application can be downloaded here: https://sealog.abrinc.com/pages/qaqsea.html.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Lab
Methodology_Description:
Contributed survey data was staged in a relational database designed for ingestion of those data. The data were evaluated for completion, accuracy and field collection standards. Those data were then evaluated for steps needed to bring it to NPPSD standards for migration and integration into the master database. In version 4.0, steps included making sure transects were split into approximately 3.3 km segments, behaviors were standardized, location information was accurate, and scientific names were current. Most of the datasets that were added into version 4.0 were proofed and formatted using a data proofing application called QA/QSea. We developed this application with collaborators to facilitate the efficient integration of data into the NPPSD. More information can be found at the NPPSD webpage (https://doi.org/10.5066/F7WQ01T3), and the application can be downloaded here (https://sealog.abrinc.com/pages/qaqsea.html).

Process_Description:
Create Data Tables - Import contributed datasets into new working databases. Each dataset is proofed and modified individually in order to conform to the NPPSD standard. Fields are checked for data integrity, i.e. numeric fields could not include characters, locations were mapped and checked for accuracy, etc.
Process_Date: Unknown
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Standardization - Survey data was originally stored in various formats. Data fields and organization were variable and required several steps to provide standardized records. Incoming data sets are first imported into QA/QSea (quality control application) and proofed and standardized. Where necessary, data fields are renamed and cross-walked to the standard values. Taxonomy codes varied between contributors, and some changed over time, therefore, we cross-referenced taxonomy within each survey to the current Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) database, or in some cases of very recent updates, we used the eBird/Clements Checklist or the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Density calculation - Survey area in square kilometers was generated for each survey transect based on transect width. Density calculations were made by dividing the recorded number of observations for each species by behavior and survey area in square kilometers. Behavior was split so researchers could select only birds on the water or combine these classes.

Process_Description:
Distance to Strip - For surveys collected using the distance methodology, we converted observations into strip equivalents. When using the distance methodology, the distance from the boat is calculated. Based on the size of the boat we choose a distance of 100 m to each side for small boats and 150 m for large boats as our strip. All birds within that strip were considered on-transect, all birds beyond that distance were included as off-transect observations.

Attribute_Definition:
Type of survey methodology. Although most of the data were classified as "Pelagic Survey-Strip", some missing survey types were assumed to be pelagic surveys if they included transect duration and transect width. Surveys that were conducted using the distance sampling method were called "Pelagic Survey-Distance". During the OCSEAP data collection there also were "Station" surveys, where species were counted in a fixed area (from a non-moving platform) over a fixed time period. The survey type “Off Transect Observation” is used only on a few samples from the OCSEAP data. Survey types of “Station” and “Off Transect Observation” do not have a sample area, so they are automatically excluded from density calculations.
