Description:
Abstract:
These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program, nearshore monitoring component. The dataset consists of 10 tables of data organized into four folders. The data are presented in Comma Separated Value (CSV) format exported from a Microsoft Access relational database. The tables are: 1) invertebrate taxonomy, 2) limpet size, 3) limpet counts, 4) Nucella, Katharina, and Lirabuccinum counts, 5) rocky intertidal cover, 6) rocky intertidal percent cover, 7) rocky intertidal top layer percent cover, 8) rocky intertidal substrate percent cover, 9) sea star counts, and 10) sea star disease.
Purpose:
These data were collected to estimate percent cover and densities of intertidal invertebrates and algae to assess change in communities from sheltered rocky shorelines.
Sampling was conducted within regions of Alaska including: Kenai Peninsula (KEP; Kenai Fjords National Park), Alaska Peninsula (AKP; Katmai National Park and Preserve), and Prince William Sound (PWS; northern, western, and eastern Prince William Sound). Study site locations are described in the "Monitoring Site Locations" data release: https://doi.org/10.5066/F78S4N3R (Coletti et al. 2017).
Supplemental_Information:
These data are a component of the nearshore monitoring portion of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) program. There are multiple datasets associated with the rocky site sampling.
Two additional closely related USGS Data Releases from these sampling locations are available: (1) temperature logger data (https://doi.org/10.5066/F7WH2N3T) and (2) mussel (Mytilus) sampling (https://doi.org/10.5066/F7FN1498).

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) protocols for these data included: 1) entering identification data directly into the electronic databases in the field, thus avoiding transcription errors while copying from data sheets, 2) algae and invertebrate names were verified and standardized by using drop-down lists on electronic data entry forms, 3) data were proofed and edited immediately after each site was sampled and before beginning a new site, 4) all records were checked for missing values, duplicates, outliers, and inconsistencies, and 5) field notes and other data sheets associated with rocky intertidal monitoring were checked against the database.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Attribute values fall within expected ranges. Counts of zero are included in the database and defined in the metadata. Counts that were incomplete or not performed according to the protocol are not included. The null values "." indicate that no data was provided, and do not infer a count of zero.
Completeness_Report:
All CSV Tables: In 2011, sites in Katmai National Park and Preserve (AKP_B10 site codes) were not sampled. In 2007, sampling began in Kenai Fjord National Park (KEP_B05 site codes), but complete data were not collected at all sites. In 2006, 2008, and 2009, western Prince William Sound (PWS_B08 site codes) was not sampled. In 2012 and 2014, eastern Prince William Sound (PWS_B09 site codes) was sampled. In 2013 and 2015, northern Prince William Sound (PWS_B07 site codes) was sampled. In 2020, only sea star data were collected at select sites due to the global Covid-19 Pandemic. In 2023, KEP_B05_RI_02 was not sampled due to inclement weather.
"KATMKEFJWPWS_2006-2023_Sea_Star_Count.csv": The 2007 data from Kenai Fjords National Park and Katmai National Park and Preserve were not included. Field observers counted sea stars along the 0.5 and 1.5 m transect lines at study sites in 2007, instead of in a band from mean lower low water (MLLW). Consequently, the data were not comparable to other count data.

Sampling sites and transects: Transects for rocky intertidal sampling were marked with stainless steel eye-bolts and a site ID marker plate to ensure consistency in sampling location. Additionally, several eye-bolts were placed along the transects' horizontal length to ensure similar placement of the line. Tide prediction software and GPS clocks were used to estimate MLLW for the swath lower boundary, but coordinates were not recorded. Rather, each year when re-sampling the site, the same tools were used to conduct the star swath count.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Sea star counts: Observers used transect tapes and visual estimations of 4 m wide swaths. Sea stars were counted along 50 to 100 m long x 4 m wide swaths at each of several randomly selected sites within sheltered rocky shorelines. The lower edge of the transect was placed at MLLW. Note that all animals were observed without moving rocks and animals under rocks were not counted. This likely resulted in an underestimate of the number of individuals on a transect. Leptasterias epichlora (small sea stars often found under rocks) were not counted.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Snail and chiton counts: Observers used transect tapes and quadrat frames. Nucella spp. and Katharina tunicata were counted in 12 systematically placed quadrats at the mid and low tidal elevations (0.5 and 1.5 m above MLLW) along 50 to 100 m transects at randomly selected sites within sheltered rocky shorelines. In 2006, 100 m transects were sampled. Thereafter, sampling was conducted along 50 m transects. Quadrat sizes were 1 square meter at all sites in 2006 and 2007 and 2 square meters at all other times and sites with the exceptions noted in this metadata record.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Random point contact data: Observers used transect tapes, quadrat frames with cross-strings, and pointers to identify invertebrates and algae. Percent cover of intertidal algae and sessile invertebrates was measured within 12 systematically placed 1/4 square meter quadrats at the low and mid tidal elevations (0.5 and 1.5 m above MLLW) along 50 to 100 meter long transects at randomly selected sites within sheltered rocky shorelines. In 2006, 100 meter transects were sampled. Thereafter, sampling was conducted along 50 meter transects. Each algal or sessile invertebrate species that occurred under each of 49 (in 2006 and 2007) or 25 (2008 and thereafter) systematically placed points in each quadrat was recorded. Species that were observed in each quadrat but did not fall under a systematically placed point were entered as layer 0. The zero data were used to generate species lists and number of species present, but not percent cover.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Limpet counts and measurements: The density of Lottia persona was measured along 50 meter transects at randomly selected sites within sheltered rocky shorelines. The transects were placed within the approximate center of the vertical distribution of L. persona along the shoreline, generally 3 to 4 m above MLLW. The radius of a circle within which the first 20 L. persona that were encountered occurred was measured to the nearest 1.0 cm at each of 6 points along the transect. The first limpet circle start point was determined by placement of the random-point contact quadrat. Every other quadrat placement location along the horizontal tape was selected yielding 6 limpet circles per rocky site. Each individual limpet was measured with dial calipers to the nearest millimeter. The distance in centimeters from the start of the circle to the farthest limpet was recorded as the search radius. Limpet densities may be calculated as the number per area of the circle. In some cases where limpets were rare, fewer than 20 limpets were encountered.

A U.S. Geological Survey data release containing site location information for nearshore Rocky Intertidal studies.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Most field data were entered directly into a Microsoft Access database using data entry forms. Some data were recorded on field data sheets for entry later. The field crew and field data manager reviewed all data sheets for missing, illegible, or confusing entries and corrected any issues. Study site information and small datasets such as the slope and substrate tables were checked against the field data sheets. Each row and column were checked for accuracy and completeness. Measurement datasets were checked for outliers.
Process_Date: Unknown
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Database QAQC queries were completed, and any items flagged were corrected in the field. Checks were made on-site for all study site visit notes, quadrat samples and number of limpets per quadrat. Checks were also made to ensure the radius equaled 1.0 m if 'Lottia persona' total was less than 20. A copy of the data was shared among monitoring program PIs for another round of QAQC. All suggested changes were communicated back to the NPS and SWAN database administrator, where the changes were made. Finally, a Comma Separated Value (CSV) table was exported from the database for external sharing purposes.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
A copy of the data was provided to Dr. Sarah Traiger (or Dr. Tom Dean prior to 2022) for an additional round of QAQC. Any fixes were communicated back to the NPS-SWAN database administrator. Finally, a comma separated values (.csv) file of each table was exported. Each file contains the whole time series.

Spatial_Data_Organization_Information:
Indirect_Spatial_Reference:
The only spatial information in this dataset are the named locations for the sampling sites. Sites are documented with start and end coordinates and are also referred to by name (e.g., Herring Bay rocky sampling site). Please refer to Coletti et al. 2017, a USGS data release which provides for geographic coordinates of all sites: https://doi.org/10.5066/F78S4N3R
