Description:
Abstract:
These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long term monitoring program, pelagic monitoring component. This dataset consists of one table, providing zooplankton biomass data from samples collected in the upper 50 m of the water column during summer surveys in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Data include: date, time, latitude, longitude, depth, species identification, and biomass.
Purpose:
These data were collected to estimate the zooplankton biomass and composition in various sampling sites throughout Prince William Sound, Alaska. They are a component of an ecosystems approach to understanding forage fish distribution.
Supplemental_Information:
This project is a component of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council’s integrated, multi-project program known as Gulf Watch Alaska (Long-term Monitoring of Marine Conditions and Injured Resources and Services). To detect changes in populations of forage fish in Prince William Sound (PWS), we gathered data on the distribution, abundance, community structure, habitat, and body condition of key species in PWS.

Methodology_Description:
Zooplankton were sampled with a 150 micron mesh 0.25 meter diameter paired ring net on a 50 m vertical haul or to within 5 meter of the bottom in shallow water. The net was lowered off the side of the vessel using a pot puller that could regulate the speed of the descent. Zooplankton samples were collected during the accent to the surface. Samples from both nets were filtered with 150 micron mesh or smaller and preserved in one container with a 10% full strength formalin solution.
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Laboratory
Methodology_Description:
Zooplankton samples were identified to species (or lowest possible taxon) and life stage whenever possible, up to 10 individuals per species/life stage were weighed, and abundance was estimated using a plankton splitter after large organisms were counted and removed. After summing the weights by species and dividing by volume filtered, total zooplankton and copepod biomass (mg m^-3) was calculated for each station.
