Description:
Abstract:
These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long term monitoring program, pelagic monitoring component. This datasets consist of multiple tables (one for each sample station and frequency), providing echointegration data from forage fish survey transects in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Each file contains analysis exports from EchoView Software Pty Ltd. ver. 7.1.29.30212.
Purpose:
Common forage species of Prince William Sound, for example capelin (Mallotus catervarius), Pacific sand lance (Ammodytes personatus), juvenile walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus), eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus), Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) and euphausiids (Euphausiacea), are important to marine food webs because they link primary and secondary producers with higher trophic levels. The purpose of this data collection effort was to measure hydroacoustic backscatter as an index of biomass in the water column.

This project is a component of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council’s integrated, multi-project program known as Gulf Watch Alaska (Long-term Monitoring of Marine Conditions and Injured Resources and Services). To detect changes in populations of forage fish in Prince William Sound (PWS), we gathered data on the distribution, abundance, community structure, habitat, and body condition of key species in PWS.

Hydroacoustic data were obtained from a hull-mounted SIMRAD ER60 split beam dual frequency echosounder operating at 120 and 38 kHz. Tranducers were calibrated at the start of each survey following Foote et al. (1987). Raw data were collected to a maximum depth of 500 m at 0.512 ms transmitted pulse length.

Sounder-detected bottom line were edited by visually inspecting the 38 kHz echogram. Any data below the bottom line and above 4 m from the surface were excluded from the integration export.
