Abstract:
These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long term monitoring program, pelagic monitoring component. This dataset consists of one table, providing echointegration data of macrozooplankton from three regions of Prince William Sound, Alaska that typically contain foraging aggregations of humpback whales.
Purpose:
Macrozooplankton, such as euphausiids (Euphausiacea), are important to marine food webs because they are prey for many marine predators. The purpose of this data collection effort was to measure hydroacoustic backscatter as an index of biomass in the water column in areas that humpback whales are known to forage.

This project is a component of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council’s integrated, multi-project program known as Gulf Watch Alaska (Long-term Monitoring of Marine Conditions and Injured Resources and Services). To detect changes in populations of forage fish in Prince William Sound (PWS), we gathered data on the distribution, abundance, community structure, habitat, and body condition of key species in PWS.

Acoustic backscatter in the water column were classified using frequency response methods for inshore waters (De Robertis and Ormseth 2018). Briefly, the frequency response (ΔSv120kHz – 38 kHz) in each 5 ping by 5 m acoustic sample was computed using a minimum threshold of -80 dB for both frequencies, and 120 kHz samples with values in the range of 8 to 30 dB were classified as macrozooplankton based on known acoustic scattering characteristics (De Robertis et al. 2010). Echointegration was conducted for each 100 m horizontal by 5 m depth cell using Echoview 11 (Echoview Software LTD, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia).
