Description:
Abstract:
These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long term monitoring program, pelagic monitoring component. This dataset consists of one table, providing fish catch data from summer surveys in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Data includes: date, time, latitude, longitude, fish common name, and fish count. Various catch methods were used to obtain fish samples for aerial and hydroacoustic validations, including: modified herring trawl, purse seine, beach seine, gillnet, cast net, dip net, and jig.
Purpose:
These data were collected to characterize the forage fish distribution, abundance, and composition within Prince William Sound, Alaska, as part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) Long-term Monitoring Program - Pelagic Monitoring Component. The data are used to monitor and assess changes in forage fish through time.
Supplemental_Information:
This project is a component of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council’s integrated, multi-project program known as Gulf Watch Alaska (Long-term Monitoring of Marine Conditions and Injured Resources and Services). To detect changes in populations of forage fish in Prince William Sound (PWS), we gathered data on the distribution, abundance, community structure, habitat, and body condition of key species in PWS.

ITIS currently lists all capelin as Mallotus villosus. However, the current molecular based taxonomic designation by the Mecklenburg and Steinke 2015 considers capelin of the North Pacific, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas to be Mallotus catervarius.

Methodology_Description:
Fish schools were spotted by aerial or hydroacoustic surveys, the schools were validated for species and age class. Various catch methods were used to obtain fish samples for aerial and hydroacoustic validations, including: modified herring trawl, purse seine, beach seine, gillnet, cast net, dip net, and jig.
All fish were identified and enumerated by fisheries biologists in the field, or samples were frozen and identified in the lab later. Large catches were sub-sampled by volume and total numbers were estimated from the proportion of fish in the sub-sample. Fish were measured with a standard ruler with millimeters and weighed in grams with a calibrated Pesola or a Marel M2200 Marine Lab Scale.
