Abstract:
These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long term monitoring program, pelagic monitoring component. This dataset consists of multiple tables (one for each year of sampling), providing several physical oceanographic measures at sampling stations throughout Prince William Sound, Alaska. Data were collected with a Seabird Electronics conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiler equipped with various sensors and data were processed with Seabird Electronics software. Data include: date, time, latitude, longitude, depth, conductivity, temperature, salinity, turbidity, fluorescence, density, oxygen, pH, Par, sound velocity, beam attenuation and transmission at one meter increments.
Purpose:
These data were collected to document and profile the physical oceanography in the marine waters of Prince William Sound, Alaska, as it relates to forage fish abundance and distribution over time.
Supplemental_Information:
This project is a component of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council’s integrated, multi-project program known as Gulf Watch Alaska (Long-term Monitoring of Marine Conditions and Injured Resources and Services). To detect changes in populations of forage fish in Prince William Sound (PWS), we gathered data on the distribution, abundance, community structure, habitat, and body condition of key species in PWS.

Methodology_Description:
Oceanographic conditions were sampled with a Seabird Electronics SBE19 (2012) and SBE19Plus (2013-2021) conductivity-temperature-depth profiler (CTD) equipped with various sensors. The Ecosampler bottles are programed before the CTD cast to collect water on the up cast at: bottom depth, 10 meters, and the surface (2 meters). The CTD is deployed off the side of the R/V Alaskan Gyre and lowered into the water just deep enough for all sensors to be covered by water, allowing time for the sensors to acclimate for 3 minutes. After acclimation, the CTD is lowered into the water column at a rate of 1 meter/second until the desired bottom depth is reached. The CTD is then retrieved, turned off and the data is uploaded to the seabird software with a corresponding configuration file. Replacement sensors for the Transmissometer WET Labs C-Star and the Fluorometer WET Labs ECO-AFL/FL were added in 2013, along with additional sensors for Turbidity Meter WET Labs ECO-NTU (2013) and pH (2015).
