Description:
Abstract:
This package contains seven tables of avian and habitat survey data from Bering Land Bridge National Preserve; part of the Arctic National Park Network (ARCN), Alaska. Tables include: 1) characteristics of bird survey sites, 2) vegetation classification at survey sites, 3) shorebird and predator detection surveys, 4) spot check bird surveys, 5) all bird species detection surveys, 6) taxonomic details of observed birds, and 7) point count habitat photos. Additionally, geospatial data corresponding to subsections, survey plots, and points are included with this data release in folder "montaneBirdInventory_geospatial_BELA". All data pertaining to the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve is also released as part of a study on Bristle-thighed Curlew abundance and habitat use on the Seward Peninsula.
Note: The data presented in this release were collected following an unpublished protocol (C. Handel et al. unpubl., USGS ASC, Anchorage, AK).
Purpose:
This survey provides the first comprehensive assessment of the breeding range and habitat associations of the major avian species within Bering Land Bridge National Preserve.

Methodology_Description:
In conjunction with a broader study of the Bristle-thighed Curlew, we conducted 11-to-39 point counts in each of six montane areas (Ear Mountain, Serpentine Hot Springs, North Serpentine Hot Springs, Hannum Creek, Burnt River, and West Bat) in and adjacent to the park in plots approximately 10 km x 10 km in size. During each 10-minute point count we recorded all shorebirds and potential avian predators out to an unlimited distance and documented the presence of all other species of birds detected during the count. Finally, we also recorded weather data, habitat cover within 150 m of each survey point, and the behavior of each shorebird and potential avian predators detected.
We sampled several additional montane areas with spot-checks, which were brief (one to six hour) searches on foot in prime breeding habitat of the Bristle-thighed Curlew. During spot checks, observers recorded the presence of all shorebirds detected and, if the situation permitted, all other species.

Field Records QAQC: Observational data were collected by experienced field observers using binoculars. Raw data were recorded on field data sheets by the observer or a data recorder and then transferred to an Access Database upon return from the field. Locations are obtained by handheld Garmin 12, Garmin III+, and Etrex GPS units or marked on paper field maps that were used to create a GIS and coordinate extract.
