Abstract:
This package contains seven tables of avian and habitat survey data from four parks (Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park, Noatak National Preserve) of the Arctic National Park Network (ARCN), Alaska. Tables include: 1) characteristics of bird survey sites, 2) vegetation classification at survey sites, 3) shorebird and predator detection surveys, 4) all bird species detection surveys, 5) bird breeding observations, 6) taxonomic details of detected birds, and 7) point count habitat photos. Additionally, geospatial data corresponding to subsections, survey plots, and points are included with this data release in folder "montaneBirdInventory_geospatial_ARCN".
Purpose:
The objectives of the survey were to document the occurrence of 90 percent of the species of birds likely to occur in montane habitats and determine the distribution and abundance of species of special concern at Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park, and Noatak National Preserve.

We defined the sampling universe as all areas within the parks less than or equal to 100m in elevation and less than a 30-degree slope, however, there were some exceptions to this rule. To identify potential plots, we randomly shifted (Overton 1993) an existing Alaska-wide GIS grid with a plot size of 10 km x 10 km. We used a stratified random sampling design to select sample plots. A total of 20 to 28 survey points were selected for each plot and allocated in proportion to the extent of different ecological subsections within each plot. Points were spaced at 500-m intervals along transects that were placed across gradients of elevation and land cover. Multiple transects within the same subsection were spaced at least one drainage apart. All geospatial information corresponding to plot selection is a available in folder "montaneBirdInventory_geospatial_ARCN" with this data release.

Surveys were timed to coincide with the period of peak courtship activity of birds, particularly for shorebirds. Birds were sampled with point count (e.g., Ralph et al. 1995) and variable circular plot (e.g., Buckland et al. 2001, 2004) methodologies using protocols developed by the USGS ASC Shorebird Project. Observers worked in two-person field crews with at least one member of each crew having had three to eight field seasons of experience conducting point counts of birds in arctic and/or subarctic Alaska.
At each point we conducted two counts: (1) one of 10-minute duration where we collected detailed information on shorebirds and potential avian predators (e.g., hawks, falcons, corvids) and kept a tally of all other avian species; and (2) a subsequent count of 5-minute duration at the same location, during which we collected detailed information on landbirds (including ptarmigan) and waterbirds.
