Description:

Abstract:

This dataset consists of three tables, 1) taxonomy, 2) contributors, and 3) shorebird morphological measurements collected from various species captured from 1977-2021. In addition, photographs of plumage patterns are available for several species. Researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey - Alaska Science Center, along with collaborators from many government agencies and research institutions, have studied shorebirds at numerous sites across North America, the Pacific Ocean, Australia, and New Zealand. This release includes over 10,000 observations relating to 35 shorebird species.

Purpose:

These observations were collected to understand species-specific patterns of size, morphometry, and molt in shorebirds.

Supplemental_Information:

This data release provides only capture and measurement data of adult shorebirds. Users should be aware that other data or samples from some of the individual birds documented herein may exist. Other data may be maintained by the data collectors, published in reports and scientific articles, or available in other publicly accessible data products, such as U.S. Geological Survey data releases: Measurements of shorebird chicks in Alaska and Canada (https://doi.org/10.5066/P9ZH3JNQ) and USGS Alaska Science Center Wildlife Tracking Data Collection (https://doi.org/10.5066/P9VYSWEH).

Methodology_Description:

Identification of birds was made in the field by skilled observers based on general appearance of plumage (Prater et al. 1977), behavior, and vocalization. Shorebirds were captured for measurement using a variety of methods (e.g., mist nets, rocket nets, whoosh nets, walk-in traps, noose mats, bownets, etc.; Gratto-Trevor 2018), and we followed standard procedures to measure (e.g., exposed culmen, total head, wing, body mass, diagonal tarsus, etc.; Gratto-Trevor 2018), age (Prater et al. 1977), and assess the molt (Ginn and Melville 1983) of birds.
