Description:
Abstract:
This dataset provides annual summaries of information on age-0 sablefish in Rhinoceros Auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata) chick diets from Middleton Island, Alaska. This includes number of diet samples, number of sablefish sampled, proportion of total biomass, catch per unit effort, and frequency of occurrence for each year.
We calculated an annual growth index for age-0 sablefish using the relationship between mean length by day and Julian day for each year (OLS[F = 24.44, df = 61, 184]: R^2 = 0.85, p < 0.001). From this model, growth (in mm per day) is the slope, and predicted length (in mm) is the length on the median Julian day = 205 (July 24). Annual anomalies of growth and length are calculated for each variable by subtracting the mean of all years.
Purpose:
These data were collected as part of the Gulf Watch Alaska long term monitoring forage fish project conducted by the Institute for Seabird Research and Conservation and the U.S. Geological Survey Alaska Science Center. Sablefish are an economically valuable commercial groundfish species, and this information on age-0 growth and size are relevant to the Ecosystem Socioeconomic Profile for the sablefish stock in Alaska, which is a synthesis of datasets used by the groundfish management team that conducts stock assessment for the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Methodology_Description:
Sample collection began in 1978, with annual collections conducted annually since 1993 (Hatch and Sanger, 1992). Each year during the seabird chick rearing period (late June to August), juvenile sablefish are captured by auklets and puffins foraging offshore. Whole, fresh fish prey are brought back to Middleton Island (approximately 59.4 N, 146.3 W) by seabirds in their "bill loads." Chick diets are collected by intercepting the adults on their way to provision the chicks. Incoming birds are captured with small dip nets, the birds drop the meals, and fish in each bill load are then identified, enumerated, and measured for length and weight (Hatch and Sanger, 1992).

Process_Description:
We summarized the chick diet data by summing the number of samples collected in each year, summing the number of sablefish collected in each year, calculating the proportion of biomass for sablefish as the sum of sablefish weights divided by the sum of all sample biomass, catch per unit effort (CPUE) as the number of sablefish divided by the number of samples collected, frequency of occurrence as the number of samples with sablefish present divided by the total number of samples collected.
