Description:
Abstract:
This data set documents the width of annual otolith growth increments from Lake Trout collected in lakes within Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska. The analysis of this data was published in von Biela et al. 2020 (DOI: 10.1111/eff.12566)
Purpose:
The data were obtained to develop an otolith growth chronology for Lake Trout as a proxy for lake production.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attributes were spot checked and values were sorted to identify possible errors. All data was plotted for visual comparisons and outliers were confirmed against images of otolith growth increments.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Growth increments widths were measured from the most recent age at the otolith edge toward the center of the otolith. Measurement time series can be incomplete within an individual if the annuli for younger ages were difficult to delineate (e.g., a measurement series need not start at age-0 or age-1).
Completeness_Report:
The only known omissions from this report were the 171 of 251 total lake trout caught that were not included because they had otolith growth increments that were not clear enough for growth measurements.
Lineage:
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Lake Trout were captured from seven lakes in Lake Clark NPP in the headwaters of Bristol Bay and Kuskokwim Bay in southwest Alaska. Lake Trout were captured using variable mesh floating and sinking gillnets or hook and line sampling in 2004 and 2011–2013 during the summer (June–September) as described in Kreiner (2006).

Detailed_Description:
Entity_Type:
Entity_Type_Label: lakeTrout_otolithGrowth_LakeClarkNP_vonBiela_1979_2012.csv
Entity_Type_Definition:
Comma Separated Value (CSV) table containing lake trout id number assignments, replicate identification, the axis used to measure otolith rings, from what lake the fish was caught, the year of capture for the growth increment of the otolith, the age of the fish at the time of increment formation, and the width of the annual increment measured in millimeters.
Entity_Type_Definition_Source: Producer Defined
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: FishID
Attribute_Definition:
Unique identifier assigned to each fish. The first two places in the FishID are "LT" to indicate the common species name, lake trout, and the following three places are digits to indicate the unique number for each individual fish. FishID is not sequential because only 80 of the initial 251 individuals available for this study had otolith growth increments clear enough for growth measurements.
Attribute_Definition_Source: Producer Defined
Attribute_Domain_Values:
Unrepresentable_Domain:
Using the FishIDs for LLC_LT040 and LT0010, as examples, the prefix LLC_LT represents "Little Lake Clark lake trout" due to early data entry methods, but later FishID prefixes were shortened to LT representing "Lake Trout" when "Lake" became a separate field. The numbers following the aforementioned prefixes, i.e., 040, and 0010, respectively, represent the individual fish.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: ReplicateID
Attribute_Definition:
Unique identifier assigned to each replicate measurement transect. The first five places indicate the FishID. Some otoliths available for this study were also labeled with an additional number that is included after the FishID following a period (e.g., ".1"). The last place reflects the transect letter denoted as a capital letter A, B, C, or D.
Attribute_Definition_Source: Producer Defined
Attribute_Domain_Values:
Unrepresentable_Domain:
Example: LT055.1A
LT stands for Lake Trout. The number represents the FishID. The additional number found after the decimal point is a further identification of the fish otolith. The final letter denotes a blind transect measured on otoliths to minimize errors from interpretation.
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: Axis
Attribute_Definition:
A categorical assignment of the growth transect along which measurements of each annual growth increments were made. A "S" denotes that measurements were made along the short axis on the dorsal side of the otolith immediately adjacent to the sulcus from the nucleus toward the proximal edge. A "L" denotes that measurements were made along the long axis of the otolith from the nucleus toward either the dorsal or ventral edge.
