Abstract:
The Alaska Forage Fish Database (AFFD) is a consolidation of survey data from multiple agencies that were sampled via fishing gear and predator diets. The spatial coverage includes the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, Chukchi Sea, and Beaufort Sea. Fish species within the database include Pacific sand lance, Pacific capelin, Pacific herring, juvenile walleye pollock and Pacific cod, myctophid, squid, and euphausiid. The data package is comprised of six tables: (1) catch_table includes counts, weight, and individual morphological characteristics (length, sex, age) of the sampled species; (2) event_table includes sampling time, location, and methods; (3) gear_table includes specifics about of the gear used for sampling when applicable; (4-5) two tables with taxonomic designations for forage species or predator species; and (6) a reference table that provides summary information about each contributed dataset.
Purpose:
These data were compiled to provide information on the occurrence, abundance, density, temporal trends, and spatial distribution of forage fish across Alaska. The data can provide comparisons between predator diets and fishing gear surveys regarding forage fish occurrence and trends across space and time.

There are no current plans to release updated versions after this publication. Funding was provided by the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management (BOEM) for risk assessment and resource management in oil and gas development regions.

Data was collected using a variety of methods for gear surveys (small and large-mesh trawls, beach seines, purse seines, jigging, and gill, dip, fyke, and cast nets), groundfish diets (stomach contents), and seabird diets (i.e. regurgitation, stomach contents or bill load for adult bird or chicks). Performance of QA-QC involved reviewing data consistencies and flagging samples that were determined to be "unsatisfactory" by the source contributors. Quality control applied by the data contributors varies across sources. Contact information is available in the source reference table for more details on QA-QC performed by the contributors.
To indicate whether data could be used for abundance, the gear survey sample designs are designated as "design based", "opportunistic", "targeted", or "other". To standardize the database, collection methods were generalized into broader categories with additional information for gear surveys available in the gear table.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
There were few set limits for numeric fields due to the variety of different sampling methods included. If length recorded was significantly longer than the published maximum lengths, the length field was made blank (NA). Certain collection methods (i.e., large-mesh bottom trawl surveys) were more prone to larger weight and count measurements in comparison to other methods. Data fields that did not apply to either the gear survey data or predator diet data have blank (NA) fields. Sampling events with absent latitude and/or longitude fields were removed from the dataset. Datasets had inconsistent definitions of marine regions and were thus standardized by assigning all site locations to the regions defined by the NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center survey and management areas. If a survey only gave subsample measurements of catch, the event was removed. Only catch data with total sample weight or count of the specie within a given sampling event were included. Species catch with both unmeasured and individual measurements must sum to the total sample size. Subsample method (i.e. random subsampling, select sampling) was not included due to limited reporting in datasets. Caution should be used as subsample type may bias the length frequency data.
Completeness_Report:
All survey data has a latitude, longitude, and date. Certain columns can only apply to either the predator diets or gear surveys. Blank (NA) values indicate that no value was provided in the original dataset. Many columns that were only applicable to a single data set were removed from the completed database. If a sampling event has no corresponding values in the species catch table, then none of the forage species were observed during the survey.

Data is assumed to be collected using NAD83 or WGS84. Location of defined "lat" and "lon" field vary amongst or within surveys. For trawl surveys, the "lat" and "lon" fields are the start locations taken when gear entered the water or when the trawl was deployed. In instances where start and end location was not available, the field is the location where the net reached equilibrium. The "lat_end" and "lon_end" fields are the location at which gear retrieval began, gear exited the water, or doors entered the boat. In instances where only "lat_end" and "lon_end" field is provided from the contributor, "lat" and "lon" are left blank (NA).

There are many different field methods from diet sampling and independent fisheries surveys. For groundfish diet data, a subsample of demersal fish catch from the NMFS bottom trawl survey are selected for stomach content analysis. Collection methods for seabird diet samples at colony sites have varied across time, with samples taken from bill loads, regurgitation, and dissection. Trawls and seines are conducted with design-based, opportunistic and hydroacoustic surveys. Large-mesh bottom trawls conducted by NMFS are sampled at fixed gridded stations or via stratified random sampling. ADFG/NMFS small-mesh bottom trawls focus on targeting shrimp in the western Gulf of Alaska. Surface trawls by NMFS/AFSC conduct sampling along a grid of stations to target species in the epipelagic zone. Midwater trawls from multiple agencies are collected across transects by either targeting schools of fish with hydroacoustic signals or by sampling gridded stations. Nearshore fish communities are sampled via beach seines, purse seines, cast nets, fyke nets, and gill nets. An in-depth description of gear types can be found in the gear table (gear_table.csv). Calculate Effort: Effort is calculated in multilple ways depending on method type. The "effort_eq" field specifies the equations and variables used to calculate effort. Trawl effort is equal to area swept (net width (m) * distance towed (m)). In cases where net width is not available, the net height or net area may be used instead. When the original data uses a different effort calculation for specific trawl methods, we did not change the method and made note of the difference in the "effort_eq" field.
