A. Upcoming EventsNo Upcoming Events highlights for this week B. CurrentTracking Walruses' Foraging Movements in Response to Reduced Sea Ice Conditions For the third time in the last four years, thousands of Pacific walruses are hauling out onto the northwest shores of Alaska to rest in the absence of sea ice over the continental shelf of the Chukchi Sea. In the first two weeks of September, USGS Alaska Science Center researchers will attach satellite radio tags on up to 21 walruses on shore to track their offshore foraging movements as part of a study under the USGS Changing Arctic Ecosystems Initiative. This work is a continuation of field tagging of walruses in June and July of this year to learn more about walrus responses to reduced sea ice conditions in summer. Preliminary tracking results throughout the summer and early fall can be viewed at http://alaska.usgs.gov/science/biology/walrus/index.html. Contact: Chadwick Jay Anchorage, AK, (907) 786-7414
