B. Current

Redoubt Volcano downgraded to Yellow/Advisory
On June 30 the USGS Alaska Volcano Observatory lowered the Aviation Color Code to Yellow and the Alert Level to Advisory at Redoubt volcano. Seismic, satellite, gas, and deformation observations over the past few weeks indicate that growth of the lava dome at Redoubt has significantly slowed, if not stopped, and therefore it is possible that the current eruptive activity has ended. However, it is unknown if this represents the end of the 2009 eruption of Redoubt or if the activity has only paused temporarily and might resume in the next months. The newly emplaced lava dome may be unstable and a collapse could still cause a significant lahar. AVO will continue to monitor Redoubt's activity closely, but begin to transition off 24/7 staffing.

USGS Briefs Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program on Careers in Science
On July 10 the USGS Alaska Science Center will provide a briefing to the staff and students of the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) on the research activities conducted by the Center and an overview of the range of science careers available with the Survey. The ANSEP program, coordinated by the University of Alaska, is designed to work with students from the time they are freshman in high school through graduate school to increase university recruitment and student retention rates. ANSEP's objective is to effect a systematic change in the hiring patterns of Indigenous Americans in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Currently twelve colleges and universities located in nine states participate in the ANSEP program.
